- Alternative Character Interpretation:
- Did Roku really expect Jeong-Jeong to teach Aang firebending? Or was he just trying to get his successor to learn a lesson in discipline and self-control?
- Another alternative is that Roku also wanted Jeong-Jeong to stop hiding and rejoin the world for the eventual fight against Ozai, which he did with the other members of the White Lotus, and getting him to interact with Aang could be the trigger for that.
- Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Roku spontaneously appearing to berate Jeong-Jeong. Aang shows no signs of having transformed like he does in "The Winter Solstice Part 2" and "Avatar Day", meaning this is the only time where a previous Avatar appears before a normal human on their own.
- Broken Aesop: The overall lesson that Aang had to learn was to be more patient and show more restraint when learning firebending, so as to not lose control of his fire. While Aang does understand the dangers of firebending by the end of the episode, he also vows to never firebend again, despite the fact that he would have to eventually. This would technically eliminate any need to be careful since he was not planning to try it again. There's also Jeong Jeong repeatedly describing firebending in a purely negative light throughout the episode, referring to it as a burning curse. This, combined with Aang's refusal to firebend again, only seems to enforce the idea that firebending is evil in nature, or that it's simply not worth learning due to the inherent dangers as opposed to simply exercising more caution when learning it.
- Heartwarming in Hindsight:
- After burning Katara, Aang swears to never firebend again. He eventually came around to firebending once more, this time without burning Katara (or anyone on his side for that matter). And he also learns that fire is not destruction and savagery, as Jeong-Jeong stated, but creation and beauty.
- Also, this line from Aang: "I don't know why, but I thought you'd be better than Zuko!" Take a wild guess who Aang's proper firebending teacher is.
- Hilarious in Hindsight:
- This line from Sokka:"See if you can find a menu; I'm starving!
- Remember the Training from Hell Jeong-Jeong put Aang through? His earthbending training'll be even harder.
