Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland

Go To

  • Adorkable: Rorona is a cross between a Cute Clumsy Girl and a Plucky Girl with a touch of Genius Ditz, and fans often end up taking to her the same way everyone else in-game does.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Astrid's sexualized comeons to the teenaged Rorona have aged like milk, as has her bullying behavior overall, leading her to be particularly controversial as a character in the franchise. Even so, she still has a lot of fans who find her traumatic past and her growth over the game make her one of the most interesting characters in the series... until Meruru seemed to cause her personality to snap back to where she was at the start of this game.
  • Fan Nickname: Although Sterk may have successfully prevented Rorona from using a nickname for him, he wasn't able to prevent the fans from doing so, resulting in him being affectionately called "Suke-san" in Japanese fan circles. (The English equivalent of this in the NISA release was "Sterky", but it didn't catch on nearly as well.)
  • Game-Breaker: Tera Bombs, especially ones with good quality... that is to say, if you can remember to make it in a way so that it won't take you out with it, too.
  • Scrappy Mechanic:
    • The time management for this particular game can get a bit troublesome for some players due to the fact that days pass quickly while traveling to some of the later locations, with the last few dungeons taking more than a week to reach and some locations will cost the player three days after leaving to a new area. Certain items will take more than a day to craft, and while the player can register some items to make some assignments easier, ingots and cloth cannot and both take two days at the minimum just to make one. Most of this wouldn't be as much of an issue if not for the fact Rorona has a somewhat strict and fine-tuned calendar schedule compared to later games, so Permanently Missable Content is very easy to hit.
    • A minor one, but the end credits are unskippable in the original release (and the DX re-release), meaning that if you've unlocked all of the endings and are trying to see them all, you have to watch the 5 minute long credits sequence every single time.
  • Values Dissonance: Players coming to this game after playing the more recent "comfy" entries are often shocked by the game's casual sexual humor, but specifically Astrid being sexually aggressive with her teenaged protege and especially the scene where Tiffany, while drunk, starts groping Rorona while she begs her to stop. While some later titles like Ryza and Yumia feature extreme fan service with its character designs, the actual content of the games is very tame and starting with Dusk this type of humor was phased out.
