- Critical Backlash: The movie not only bombed at the box office, but received such scathing reviews for its miscasting that it is frequently listed on "worst films of all time" lists. Director Peter Bogdanovich even wrote letters apologizing for its lack of quality. In later years, however, it has gained defenders who argue that it's a fun movie that isn't nearly as bad as its reputation suggests. By 2013, Bogdanovich had made peace with the movie enough to release a Director's Cut.
- Questionable Casting: Many critics took jabs at the singing and dancing ability of the main cast, particularly Cybill Shepherd. Of the main cast, only Madeline Kahn (Kitty), Eileen Brennan (Elizabeth) and Duilio Del Prete (Johnny Spanish) had actual professional singing or musical theatre experience, while Shepherd (Brooke) only had a singing career post-1974, and Burt Reynolds hadn't done much in the way of music before or since.
- Retroactive Recognition: Noted character actor M. Emmet Walsh has a minor role as a doorman.
- So Okay, It's Average: The general consensus of the movie after the backlash to its overwhelmingly negative reception is that it's nowhere near one of the worst movies ever made, but it's not a good movie either, with criticism still levvied towards its choices of actors and singers, and unfocused script.
