Ashley's Story

Go To

  • Awesome Art: Many viewers agree on the quality of the fanmade microgames (notably the "Repeat!" and the "Don't get caught!" ones) not only for their unique visuals, but also for their gameplay which fits the "Total Drag" thematic of Ashley. Hocus Pocus ups the ante with custom cutscene animations that perfectly fit the art style of Smooth Moves.
  • Fanon: A recurring theme in the comments is to imagine how Wario would react if he fell on these microgames by accident: some think he would simply be disgusted and put them away, while others imagine him go Papa Wolf and get to her parents either for a talk or a serious asskicking.
  • Narm: Ashley's parents, wanting her to be like other girls, asked why she couldn't have just played with dolls or combed her hair. It's meant to be a reference to her theme song, but it can feel pretty random for her parents to bring up combing her hair as an apparent alternative to spending her time practicing witchcraft. It becomes a lot less accidentally funny when Hocus Pocus drops more hints that it's rooted in religious hatred.
  • Realism-Induced Horror: By far the most praised element of the video by the comment section is the fact it doesn’t opt to focus on the supernatural side of Ashley’s character and do what most creepypastas would do, but instead dives into a situation far more rooted in reality; specifically, Ashley living with abusive parents who hate her for not conforming to what they deem “normal”. Compared to, say, Ashley using her powers to kill others, or a ghost being inside the game, simply focusing on such a mundane and real concept is what truly makes the video terrifying.
  • Stoic Woobie: Ashley, unsurprisingly. She was hated, abused, and abandoned by her parents due to her magic, ultimately leading to her living on her own (aside from Red) in Diamond City and constantly keeping to herself. The only reason the player finds out about this is due to a mistake on Ashley's part, and she's still trying to simply deal with it herself.
