- Unintentionally Unsympathetic:
- Jack gets this reaction out of some viewers. Even some who are autistic themselves see him as overly rude to an extent where it's unrealistic for a 20-something autistic-year old with a decent job. note The way he stalks Ewatomi when she's off work (using her Instagram to find her at an arcade when he has an inquiry for her about his father’s health) and never faces serious consequences for it (Ewatomi briefly tells him it's creepy but that's it) also rubbed many viewers the wrong way.
- While Van is not presented as being in the right for taking away Violet's smartphone so she can't date or almost sending her to live at a home for autistic adults, we as viewers are nonetheless supposed to sympathize with him as he is Violent's only parental figure following the death of their parents and he is dealing with a lot of stressors in addition to it (e.g. conflict with his girlfriend). However, some viewers still felt that the show framed the way he tries to control her life as too acceptable.
- Van and Mandy repeatedly encourage Violet to date someone from the "drama club" for autistic adults as opposed to a neurotypical man she might meet on a dating app, despite her insistence that she wants to date someone "normal". Never once is this idea presented as flawed in any way on the show, and indeed, Violet does eventually agree to go on a date with Douglas, a member of the drama club, with the two sharing a kiss in the final episode. However, some viewers have argued it is borderline eugenicist for them to so strongly encourage her to date a man who is autistic like herself instead of a neurotypical one, and some autistic female viewers have unfavorably compared it to real-life experiences where they have been pressured into dating autistic men for no other reason than sharing their condition.
- Watched It for the Representation: Like Everything's Gonna Be Okay before it, many viewers who are autistic watched the show because it's one of the first to star autistic actors playing the autistic main characters.
