YMMV / All Hail King Julien

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Did Crimson really love Julian or did she have intentions on killing him, even before he broke up with her?
    • From “The King and Mrs. Mort”, was Julien genuinely sick at first and started faking later on, or was he faking the whole time? The fact that he was vomiting and sneezing for most of the episode suggests the former, but another episode suggests that he often fakes being sick to get out of having to do stuff, and after his kingdom wins the trophy, he spontaneously gets better.
  • Crosses the Line Twice:
    • Butterfish, the heavyset lemur with a stereotypically African American voice, is a walking amalgamation of stereotypes associated with working-class Afro-American men ("I gotta go to work, baby."), and is all the funnier as a result. It helps that he's actually played by a Black actor who knows exactly the kind of person he's satirizing.
    • Also, anything to do with Mort. Anything.
  • Die for Our Ship: Sage Moondancer, Clover's Love Interest, isn't exactly popular among Julien X Clover shippers, to say at least.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Mort even for people who have not watched the series and have just seen his wiki, for how strange it is.
    • Karl. Despite being a recurring villain who only shows up in AHKJ of the Madagascar franchise has his own share of fans.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: Some fans who are suscribed to the "King Julien is trans" theory prefer to ignore the show showing the previous lemur kings being male note .
  • Harsher in Hindsight: In the episode "Monkey Planet" Julien decides to leave Clover behind in his attempt to go to the moon because of her "serious issues" which upsets her. In Madagascar 2: Escape 2 Africa Julien leaves her again (along with Maurice and Mort) despite their close bond they have developed as demonstrated here and here. Naturally, this is because the character hadn't even been conceived yet but it's still sad to watch.
  • Fountain of Memes: Mort, thanks to being a weird, somewhat Ax-Crazy character with a canonical Fetish for Julien's feet who says a bunch of weirdly inappropriate stuff and for being an immortal, dimension jumping and life force sucking Animalistic Abomination with multiple personalities and 11 dead ex-wives.
  • Ho Yay: It is King Julien we're talking about here, after all.
    • Mort is still, of course, blatantly in love with Julien, admitting to such on several occassions and sneaking in line when Julien is kissing babies to get a kiss himself.
    • Julien's arch-enemy Karl has an obsession with him that is full of Foe Romance Subtext, coming on pretty strongly in his first appearance by demonstrating his superior abilities by sneaking into Julien's bed at night past his guard.
    • Ted the Lemur seems particularly excited to be around Julien, especially during the time he served as Julien's temporary bodyguard. His enthusiasm for Julien is contrasted with a lack of enthusiasm for his wife Dorothy.
Dorothy: (Regarding an intimidating painting of Julien) Ted, I can't sleep with him staring at me like that!
Ted: I know, me neither! It's just so exciting to have the king right here in our boudoir!
      Dorothy: Ted!
    • Julien's best friend Rob McTodd with whom he shares a Secret Handshake that involves wrapping their tails together and bumping butts. When they shake after resolving their differences, Rob even keeps the "rump bump" going for longer than Julien is comfortable with.
    • Julien and Maurice's Bromance song.
Julien and Maurice: I miss my buddy, my pal, my compadre, my life, my love, my lady-
      Julien: Wait, what lady?
    • Karl and his pet Cockroach Chauncey are clearly lovers, to the point where Karl even describes their relationship as "crazy love". In "Revenge of the Prom", Karl doesn't have any interest at all in a revenge plan against Julien as he is instead on a date with Chauncey to celebrate the day they met at school prom.
    • As they celebrate their stealing spree, Andy Fairfax abruptly asks Pancho if they want to wrestle for fun, promising it won't be "anything weird", but doing so in a somewhat seductive tone. Later, he suggests it again a bit more overtly, and Mort agrees to it as long as it is weird.
    • In the second to last episode, Julien and Mort assume that Clover is marrying another female lemur.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Julien mostly acts like an arrogant jerk, but in "Exiled", he goes through a lot - he loses his kingdom, which leads to him having Heroic BSoD and visions of his people, which are all crying for his help and asking why he abandoned them. Then later that season, Maurice sacrifices himself and Julien goes through another Heroic BSoD, which leads to his death. While both of them turn out to be alive and well, in the last episode Julien reveals that he doesn't feel sure if he even deserves to be a king, as he only has the title because his uncle wanted to hide from fossa.
    • Karl also qualifies if you think about it. His family pretty much treats him like garbage and his cockroach Chauncey is one of the only friends he ever has. It's hard to not want to hug him when he's driven to tears in a flashback episode because Julien completely ignores him on top of his family mistreating him.
  • More Popular Spin-Off: While not to the same extent as The Penguins of Madagascar, All Hail King Julien is widely considered much better than the films, largely for the same reasons as the Penguins' own series and the fact that Maurice, Mort, and King Julien himself have far more characterization.
  • Nightmare Fuel: When Todd goes into vicious attack mode, it's accompanied with a close-up of his demented psychotic face, complete with sharp teeth. And in "The Wrath of Morticus Khan" we see an army of Morts do it too!
  • Portmanteau Couple Name: In-Universe, when King Julien and Crimson start dating, Xixi takes to calling them the extremely awkward "Cring Msulien"
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: In the main Madagascar films, many viewers found Mort to be a sickeningly sweet Kid-Appeal Character who was only enjoyable in small doses. All Hail King Julien reimagines Mort as an unhinged Animalistic Abomination, which most of these viewers found significantly more entertaining.
