- Awesome Moments:
- Mr. Jenkins inspiring Sporos to fulfill his destiny by standing up to the Echthros and maturing into a Fara, healing his mitochondria instead of destroying it.
- The Heroic Sacrifice of Progo, Xing himself to fill the spiritual vacuum left by the Echthroi and saving them all. His ultimate fate is left ambiguous.
- Heartwarming Moments: Calvin helps prove that Mr. Jenkins has a better side to him by sharing a memory with Meg of a time when he'd outgrown his shoes and his mother couldn't afford new ones, forcing him to make do with an old pair of women's shoes with the heels and toes cut off. Mr. Jenkins gave him a new pair of shoes in the right size, which he'd unconvincingly scuffed up a bit in order to try to pass them off as used in an effort to downplay the gesture.
- Nightmare Fuel:
- The Echthroi, intangible beings whose goal is to "X" (completely remove from existence) everything and everybody. If need be, they can perfectly impersonate someone, the disguise only penetrable by those who can summon the deepest feelings of true love for the person.
- The disease killing Charles Wallace, mitochronditis. While mitochondritis itself doesn't exist, mitochondrial myopathies—a group of neuromuscular diseases caused by damage to the mitochondria
—do exist. And yes, they can kill you. Charles Wallace's illness bears a resemblance to MELAS, or mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes
. Sleep well.
