Jakob the Liar

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Is the Nazi doctor who summons Professor Kirschbaum to treat the commandant and talks about being a former student of his just buttering him up to help a superior officer sour at that Doctor? Or is he a Token Good Teammate or Bigotry Exception-holder really trying to save Kirschbaum?
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The Heroic Sacrifice through Jakob's death in the 1999 version; when you consider that Robin Williams committed suicide in 2014, it may feel like even more of a tearjerker when watching it today...
  • Vindicated by History: The film came out to a lot of criticism, but the script and cast have earned a lot more positive assessments in the years since, especially when not being automatically measured up next to Life Is Beautiful the way initial moviegoers often did given the two-year gap between the two films.
