YMMV / YouTube Poop

Go To

  • Accidental Nightmare Fuel: The ending of Jon's Dilemma on Cookies.
  • Archive Panic: There are countless different authors of Youtube Poop out there, and thousands of the videos have been cranked out each year since the mid 2000s—good luck trying to watch them all. Making it even worse is videos that get flagged for copyright infringement, which results in making it harder or flat out impossible to view quite a few of them.

  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: EVERY one of them has these. It even has its own page.
  • Broken Base:
    • Ear Rape being used in poops. It was originally regarded a staple in YTPs, but nowadays, people are split between whether it's annoying and a tell-tale sign of a Spadinner poop or if it's Actually Pretty Funny and just not used properly by poopers. However, this hasn't stopped many in the dank meme community from using copious amounts of ear rape in many meme videos.
    • Spaghetti-Dinner/Spadinner poops themselves. For some, they can be funny if done right, but to others they're a form of "Seinfeld" Is Unfunny and simply overdone. There's also a third camp who say that, while they can be done right, it takes quite a bit of effort and has to done in a way different from all the others.
    • Making sense vs not making sense. Making sense can mean many things, but it's generally agreed that a YTP that makes sense tells a story of some sort, even if it's just a Random Events Plot, and has at least one logical character in it. On the other end we reach True Art Is Incomprehensible territory, where there is no basic sense or plot in it at all. Which is preferred varies from pooper to pooper, with some trying to make arcs within their YouTube Poops and apply tropes to characters they use, and others simply aiming for as much nonsense as possible. It's a sliding scale for where each pooper lies, but there's no agreement which is better, and where it should be.

    • What defines YouTube Poop as a medium is also an issue of debate, and what it should mean as a whole. This especially applies to those who started from the beginning, where its overall aim was to drag users to something that made no sense, and just confused and frustrated viewers looking for other videos, as a form of Dada. Others keep up the nonsense and prefer to amuse with it, taking it into Surreal Humor territory. A third don't enjoy being too nonsensical, but will still amuse with the basics of editing the videos to entertain, especially with characters being In Name Only versions of themselves.
  • Complacent Gaming Syndrome:
    • Nearly everyone uses Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere, as they are capable of doing anything within the average pooper's abilities and imagination.
    • Before it was overshadowed by Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere, Windows Movie Maker was the default choice as it was instantly available to anyone with a Windows computer, and the genre was still primitive enough that WMM poops were still considered satisfactory. Nowadays, a pooper that continues to use WMM is essentially doing a Self-Imposed Challenge.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: The more vulgar and/or violent varieties of YTP often apply this. This YTP, where the king starts shooting people over what to have for dinner, is be an obvious example.
  • Discredited Meme:
    • Many older Poopers view the CD-I and video game cartoons — as well as various memes — as overused. Gratuitous usage of quotes from Hotel Mario, the CD-I Zelda games, or other memes that are seen as played out is derided by some as "spadinner". However, if used right, it can actually be even funnier.
    • Using Windows Movie Maker as the medium for making such videos due to the lack of features and effects other programs such as Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas have. It's certainly not impossible to make a good Poop with WMM, but for some viewers, a lack of effects is seen as boring.
    • Proclaiming in a video's title or description that it's a Poop, which is seen as defeating the entire purpose of Pooping: subversion.
    • Even "joj" and "sus" have started to become this, though this is mostly due to being overused by some video makers and losing its humor factor as a result. While a typical video can get away with the occasional sus jokes, videos centered entirely around them tend to be poorly received.
    • The usage of offensive humor (i.e. 9/11 jokes and usage of racial slurs and stereotypes), which seems to have peaked with Nutty Rosen's YTP's and Mad Mothz's "Offensive Collab". It's a surefire way to get your video seen as overly edgy.
      • Hell, one compilation of cartoonlover98's 9/11 jokes was "arrested" (i.e. added to one of several playlists with names spoofing those of actual California prisons) by the Troll user DeleteTheseCookieMonsters.
    • Intros for YouTube Poop have become this for some as they're often a tell-tale sign of a bad video. It got to the point where one of Noisepuppet's YouTube Poops had a comment requesting that the line "It's toot, it's a hoot, it's YouTube Poop!" replace "Where there's smoke, they pinch back!"
  • Dork Age: The entire medium went through one with the newbie boom in 2007 and 2008. With the influx of new poopers combined with a lack of innovation, the same sources and editing styles were regurgitated to the point where it would cause a backlash within the community, known as the War on AIDS. While the poop community has evolved beyond this point, the fallout can still be felt, as can be seen with any discussion related to "spadinner."note
  • Fandom Rivalry:
  • Fanon: Some concepts not present in the source material have transcended the videos they originated from to become commonly accepted in almost any poop.
    • Hyrule's royal family living in Ludwig's Castle Hotel from Hotel Mario is one example. Some Poopers change the name on the castle or remove it, but others, even a few who use Sony Vegas and easily could, leave the name intact.
    • King Harkinian's "Munf Munf" cereal is another that has transcended to become fanon, as well as his "Dinner Blaster".
    • The King's retainer being named "Fari"
  • Franchise Original Sin: It began as a form of trolling, and it formed largely around confusing and annoying viewers. By 2009, when the genre became familiar, trolls - mainly MeiAIDS - would ramp up their trolling with increasingly outlandish stunts, ranging from making trap videos to hacking thumbnails (some of these hacked thumbnails are still in the wild though; one example (probably) being that of He Touched Me Inappropriately, as the Samurai Pizza Cats make zero appearances in the video). This all boiled over in 2010 with the DMCA Crisis, when trolls took advantage of the ease of flagging videos, and take down videos and even entire channels. After this near-Genre-Killer, trolling has been reduced to lighthearted jabs made for benign amusement.
  • Friendly Fandoms: The poop community is relatively friendly towards the general "meme" community, due to the similarities in editing styles and humor.
  • "Funny Aneurysm" Moment:
  • Gateway Series: Some Poopers intentionally go out of their way to avoid using popular sources, and this can lead to fans looking up the originals.
    • Even the CD-I games and Dr. Rabbit were pretty obscure before Youtube Poop came along.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff:
    • YouTube Poop is very popular in Germany, where it is called "YouTube Kacke". They even got their own memetic footage sources and arc words, such as "meem" and "soos".
    • There is a thriving scene of Russian Youtube Poop.
    • Same with Poops in Spanish.
    • The Finnish ones (SinäTuubaPaska or occassionally SinäPutkiKakka)note  are also very popular.
    • An interesting case in Japan: While baseline YTP's aren't as popular, YTPMV's (Youtube Poop Music Videos, the concept being editing video clips and sound bites to go along with the rhythm of a song) have taken off, most notably with the use of Vocaloid.
  • Growing the Beard: Common. For example, compare this poop with this poop, created nearly two years later; the latter features some of the best sentence mixing this side of Walrusguy and it replaces the excessive "Mah boi" jokes with a plotnote .
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • In No Swearing, ThePlamzJoker's meta-licious entry for The Clean Rosen Collab, Michael realizes he violated the collab's family-friendliness rules after he murders the man telling him to stop swearing. What makes this funny was that DaThings1's entry, The OUTing, was all about a teacher murdering her students.
    • A scene in AwfulFawful's Friendship equals Magic x Ponies^2 has Scootaloo eating what looks like a Krabby Patty. Jump ahead to nearly 2 years later with the episode Twilight Time, where burgers do exist in Equestria, made from hay of course, and Twilight Sparkle binge-eats on several hay burgers.
    • In Master Hand writes some kind of erotic Smash Bros. fan fiction. there is a joke made at Roy becoming angry at Lucina for stealing his spot. He makes a threat that he'll come back as DLC and destroy her. That's exactly what happened, though minus the destroying her part.
    • In Dinner Blaster, The King uses a bazooka to fire hamburgers. In 2019, Borderlands 3 has a heavy weapon that does just that - fire hamburgers.
    • The title for Rise of Darth Sand became this when the ninth episode of Star Wars was announced to be The Rise of Skywalker.
    • In The Tragedy of Darth Sand, Yoda shoves Palpatine's Force Lightning back into him, knocking the Emperor down. In The Rise of Skywalker, Rey defeats Palpatine in more-or-less the same way.
    • Several videos feature one word reversed to create the words "Sauce" or "Sus". "Sus" would later be associated with a certain memetic video game.

How well does it match the trope?
