YMMV / X Chronicles

Go To

  • Ass Pull:
    • The Maverick Virus not being inherently evil, only being so because of Wily's influence, was this when first brought up. Though as noted at Hilarious in Hindsight below, it became less so after a certain update of Mega Man X DiVE.
    • Vile ending the series redeemed is somewhat hard to swallow, even knowing the only reason he did so is because he was brainwashed for the greater good.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: X revealing Sigma's last name. It's never brought up again and the last names of the Reploids don't have much importance anyway.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Apply some Fridge thinking and the combo of Zero's fight with Iris and the fact that the latter was created by Gate becomes this: people use dumb reason to hate a creation of Gate's. Here, for instance, they hate Iris just because she fought Zero. This example occurs in real life, hence why it's this trope.
    • In "Fall of X", X becomes very similar to Copy X, with the main difference being that X wants the best for both humans and Reploids, while Copy X only cares about humans.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: Zero's Act of True Love, giving up his Power core to save Iris, is this, since it's not the first time a Ridiculously Human Robot who is a reknowned hero gave up at least a part of his heart to save his Love Interest, who is also a Ridiculously Human Robot. Zane and Pixal, anyone?
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Sigma's last name being Enigma.
    • After X purges Wily's will from the Maverick Virus, the Virus adopts a female Reploid persona. Seemed like an Ass Pull when it first came out. But then Mega Man X DiVE ends up bringing us iCO, a female Reploid who turns out to be the Maverick Virus itself.
  • It Was His Sled:
  • Moral Event Horizon: Colonel crosses it by transforming into High Max.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap:
  • The Scrappy: Cyrex most likely tries to defy this, only having such characters if they have potential to be Rescued from the Scrappy Heap, like with Wheel Gator and Alia. Alia was considered The Scrappy in X5, but she and Signas are the only new characters Cyrex found interesting. However, he stopped playing the games after X5, and he only knows about X6 from some words (unless he DID play X6 between writing Lazarus Zero and Doppler Effect, considering 6 years have passed between writing those two sagas). He doesn't know that Alia went two steps back in X7 and three steps forward in X8, as he never played these games. However, he admitted he nearly had Alia be this. That said, Infinity Mijinion might still be this, unless Cyrex somehow rescues him from the scrappy heap as well.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Subverted. All Mavericks are given more Character Development than they ever got in the games. Especially Launch Octopus, Wire Sponge and Sting Chameleon.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Averted, but the reason so many viral Mavericks and Repliforce members are portrayed as heroic in this fanfic is because it happens a lot in the games. We're meant to pity Repliforce and the viral Mavericks, but they did multiple crimes that make people see them as monsters. In order to avert this trope and point out how the Mavericks and Repliforce really should be portrayed, Cyrex pinned all the crimes of the viral Mavericks on The Virus, portrayed them all as The Atoner, and retconned all the destruction Repliforce caused in the Repliforce War (read: they didn't cause it at all in the adaptation). Sigma isn't an exception to this rule. The only Reploids supposed to be unsympathetic are:
    • Vile, who craves destruction.
    • Violen, Serges and Agile, who actively want X dead.note
    • Bit and Byte, due to their Redemption Rejection.
    • Split Mushroom, who tortured humans and converted them into cyborg For Science!
    • Frost Walrus, Jet Stingray and Cyber Peacock, who are plain Jerkasses.
    • Magma Dragoon, who destroyed two entire cities just to get a fight.
    • Colonel, who loses much sympathy built up by the more benevolent officers (Slash Beast, Web Spider and Storm Owl) because of his Kick the Dog moment towards Iris.
  • The Woobie: Has it's own page too.
