  • Award Snub: Reese Witherspoon's performance is wildly acclaimed as her best work, even moreso than the role that won her the Oscar. However, she lost to Julianne Moore for Still Alice, which is seen as a Consolation Award for how many times Moore got snubbed herself.
  • Narm: The narrative line "My mother was the love of my life" can be seen as this. It was even worse in Cheryl's memoir, in which she said that she had sexual feelings for her mother, and berated modern society for disallowing this.

  • She Really Can Act: It was already known that Reese Witherspoon could act; but after winning an Oscar for Walk the Line, she starred in a series of wildly panned films which led to many people questioning whether she was talented to begin with. This film, with the most subtle and most emotional performance of her career, proved she was still a fantastic actress.
