• Harsher in Hindsight: When you realize that the only character from the opening of Adolf who is still alive is Moers himself.
• What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?:
  • The novels are illustrated, leading some people to believe they are children's books, despite the sometimes gruesome content. Particularly The 13 ½ Lives of Captain Bluebear runs into this problem, because Captain Bluebear has been known as a kids' TV character before that book was published.
  • In contrast, every last one of Moers' comics makes bloody clear that they aren't for kids.
