YMMV / Video Killed the Radio Star

Go To

  • Covered Up: The Buggles' version of the song is far better-known than Bruce Woolley's earlier recording, in part because of the former's status as the first video ever aired on MTV (Woolley's rendition meanwhile never had a video shot for it).
  • Genius Bonus: The Bruce Woolley version says "put the blame on VTR" instead of "put the blame on VCR" (which the Buggles' version uses). One key difference between the two formats is that VTRs (which are far more obscure than VCRs) don't have a rewind function, subtly tying into the idea of video being here to stay, whether we like it or not.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: With its airing on MTV, it successfully predicted video replacing radio as the source of new music.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Seen playing the drums and additional keyboards in the video was a young Hans Zimmer, who was a session musician on The Age of Plastic.
  • Signature Song: For The Buggles, obviously, enough so that they're generally accepted as a One-Hit Wonder. (Though the follow up single, "Age of Plastic", did do fairly well in the UK charts.)
  • Values Resonance: Being a song about how one mass medium was supplanted by a new one, "Video Killed the Radio Star" has managed to have a very healthy shelf life, due to technological advances over the coming decades continuing to prove this adage true. As early as 2001, people have been joking that the internet has now killed the video star, and it's only become truer with each passing year.
