YMMV / Valdis Story: Abyssal City

Go To

  • Breather Boss: Ragano is widely considered the easiest boss in the game. A strong enough character can get an easy S rank by just comboing him to death like any other mook.
  • Complacent Gaming Syndrome: Shadoboxxer is probably the first assist you'll find...and really the only one you'll ever need.
  • Game-Breaker: A lot of potential for them:
    • One of Wyatt's skills allows him to make enemies bleed for about 10% of the original damage inflicted per tick for 5 seconds. However, combine this with his sword's upgrade path that increases bleed damage by 50% and his magic tree skill that doubles the strength of all Status Effects and now every bleed tick will do roughly the same amount of damage as the original hit. The sword's bleed damage bonus was eventually nerfed down to 25%, but it's still very powerful.
    • As stated on the main page, Reina is heavily nudged towards putting most of her points towards AGI due to the large number of skills she can learn that increase the damage she deals that are based on it. If you then learn the skill that gives her infinite skill cancels while in Focus Mode, use the Great Fang Kick as a Focus Finisher and learn the skills that increase the strength of her finishers and the amount of Focus gained per hit, she can not only combo enemies easily and avoid all of their attacks with her evade dashes, but by properly timing her finisher at a high combo rank so that she uses it right before the Focus Mode ends, she can actually fill it right back up and keep going for as long as she wants.
    • Feel like making the game almost completely trivial? Gilda becomes practically godlike herself near the end of the game. First of all, she not only begins with a double jump, she not only gains a triple jump, but she can learn the double jump all other characters get from Daemahn, making her the only character who can quadruple jump. Next up, she also gains a skill that causes all dark magic she uses to heal her for the percentage of the damage dealt, which can practically make you immortal against anything that isn't a demon. And as for demons themselves? Level up her Soul of the Frozen One and watch as each cast decimates regular enemies and stunlocks most bosses. Also, while melee Gilda might not seem like a good idea due to her not being able to guard, she can gain skills that increase her attack speed based on how much mana she has missing. Now, combine that with gear and weaponry that restores mana, and you can practically keep yourself at low mana on purpose in order to maximise your attack speed. Go a step further and combine this with Soul of the Void's Void Blade, and you have a very inexpensive method of dealing ridiculous damage and keeping yourself at full health. Lastly, one of her final skills increases her Strength, Agility and Luck by a fraction of her Intelligence. This might not seem too beneficial to a caster, but keep in mind that having higher stats also grants you bonuses, such as the increased run speed from agility. All in all, while she might have a rough start, Gilda becomes almost unstoppable near the end of the game.
    • If you decide to mix a Luck Vladyn build with Esperanda's Long Gun, he can basically mow down everything that doesn't take fixed damage. A full Long Gun upgrade grants Vladyn +120% attack damage and +20% critical chance, alongside a nigh unblockable strong attack that spells doom to anything in front of it, and has infinite reach (read: you can obliterate enemies you have not even aggroed, let alone that are visible on the screen). Couple that with the insane amounts of crit bonuses Vladyn gets naturally from his Marksman tree and the fact that you can Lag Cancel the sniper shot by jumping, and you basically got a semi-auto pistol that is guaranteed to make damage in the hundreds every time. But, wait! There's more! Get Glambler's Rags lv3 from the fire temple for even more luck and crit bonuses, craft the Weighted Bracelets on Micia Micia's shop to gain even more power per character level, take the Back Stab perk from the 100 Demon Arm tree to gain bonus damage from back attacks (and optionally the Marauder perk to gain an extra boost per Demon Soul in your inventory), and you're guaranteed to do +1000 damage on normal enemies at the very least, all of that per shot, and that's if you don't spend points in Agility to get extra crit damage from the Hard Shells perk. Oh, did I mention one of Vladyn's perks involve him getting increased crit chance and damage every sixth shot? If you listen really closely, you can hear the tormented screams of every enemy in the game each time you start a new game with Vladyn. The only real drawback is . . . Actually, none; thanks to the lag cancel that allows you to contantly shoot even without the Sniper perk to speed up the process even more, anything that doesn't die the moment you step into a room can be parried or, preferrably, evade-dashed to get some of that juicy backstab bonus.
  • Scrappy Mechanic: The very limited fast-travel mechanic, combined with the inexplicable lack of a full world map, get many accusations of Fake Longevity.
  • That One Boss: There's a few to pick from, but the Eye of Myrgato stands out as one of the most difficult. Firstly, just as is the case with the Eye of Alagath, a certain item is needed to do any significant damage to her whatsoever, and even then it only takes effect in Focus Mode. Secondly, many of Myrgato's attacks come very quickly with little to no warning, which becomes especially problematic as she becomes more aggressive as her health depletes. Finally, once she reaches low enough health, she can fly into a rage and start spamming all of her attacks in any order. Expect her to suddenly vanish while doing a dash attack, appear behind you, and suddenly knock down a quarter of your health. And no, due to her being classed a demon, leech magic like Gilda's Soul of the Demon Lord won't allow you to heal back up like you can with Leilodin and Eye of Alagath.
    • Speaking of Eye of Alagath, why don't we see what we can talk about her? First of all, your health is constantly being drained by the cold, which depending on how powerful you are will take between 3 and 5 HP per second (although there's a potion that makes you immune). Second, Alagath LOVES to shock, freeze and silence you (although there's an armor that makes you immune). Third, it is VERY difficulty to hit this one boss when she keeps warping around. You better have invested wisely in your skills...
    • On the subject of Leilodin, she isn't to be trifled with either. It's enough that she is capable of inflicting almost every status condition on you in the game, but many of her attacks either deal very high damage or are difficult to see coming. It gets worse once she reaches around 40% health, as she summons a spectral lion that runs around the room that can also pin you down and deal damage. She only summons one of them, but considering how much health it has, one is enough.
  • That One Puzzle: The vertical room in Guardian Temple with Goibniu Armor at the top is collectively agreed to be one of the most difficult puzzles in the game. It requires you to trigger a series of timed switches in a rapid succession while moving upwards in order to reach the topmost treasure chest: the problem is that it's extremely unforgiving and every step is subject to easy failure. Mistime a jump? You fall to the bottom of the room, delaying you too much to trigger the next switch in time, start over. You try to trigger one of the crystal switches from half a pixel too far due to the lack of a visible trigger area, causing you to stand there in casting pose and having to move closer? Start over. Overshoot or undershoot a floor switch while trying to stomp on one since you need to be right on top of them to trigger them successfully? Start over. Do everything perfectly but delay your actions half a second longer than the programmers intended? The final door has a ridiculously strict time limit, slams shut in your face, start over, fight back the urge to break your controller in half. To make it even worse, when you finally do make it to the final door seemingly in time, it's extremely easy to end up in a situation where you're just about to dash through the door, only for an invisible wall to stop you while the door is closing.
