  • Broken Base: Their albums up to and including Across the Open Sea are generally considered to be death metal classics. Everything after, however, is very divisive. Victory has its fans, but is usually seen as So Okay, It's Average in comparison to their first three records. Warrior, however, is generally considered to be the start the band's low point, due to its overly short songs and shoehorned lyrics, while their comeback album Hell's Unleashed was received even more negatively for the same reasons, and is considered by most to be their absolute worst album. Just about everything after gets a different reaction depending on who you ask. Most people, however, tend to agree that their 2012 release Odalheim is one of their best albums, and their finest work since their early days, with the two albums that followed, Dawn of the Nine and The Hunt for White Christ also being greeted very positively. No Sign of Life has continued this streak.
  • Fandom Rivalry: With Amon Amarth, the other famous death metal band with Nordic themed lyrics. Both bands are Swedish, released their first album in the 1990s, and have even written about some of the same subject matter.
  • Narm Charm: The few songs they've written about gore/violence can be difficult to take seriously due to Johnny's nonchalant and impeccably clear delivery making the lyrics come off as almost darkly comedic, as well as being thematically out of nowhere from a band known for Norse themes. "Dissection Leftovers" in particular sounds like the musical equivalent of a B-movie about cannibals.
