YMMV / Under Siege 2: Dark Territory

Go To

  • Complete Monster: Travis Dane is a former government scientist responsible for creating Grazer One. He hires Marcus Penn and several mercenaries to hijack the Grand Continental train, resulting in several deaths. Once they take command, he finds two of his colleagues and forces them to give up the codes for Grazer One by threatening to insert a hot needle into their eyeballs. After he receives the codes, he has both colleagues killed, reactivates the satellite, and proceeds to demonstrate the power of Grazer One by destroying a chemical plant in China. Several terrorists offer Dane one billion dollars to destroy Washington D.C. with the satellite, an offer he happily accepts. He then goes on to destroy a civilian aircraft for another hundred million dollars. Later on, he switches the train tracks so that the Grand Continental is on a collision course for another train carrying gallons of gasoline. Near the end, shortly after Penn and most of his men are killed, he tries to flee the Grand Continental, fully prepared to let the remaining men, all of the hostages on the train, including Ryback's teenage niece Sarah, and millions of people in DC die.
  • Contested Sequel: Some people say that the movie's as good as the original, and has just the same amount of Character Development, action, and hammy villains that the first movie did. Others say that it's not as good and suffers from Sequelitis, an annoying sidekick, a slow Casey Ryback who relied more on guns than fighting, and villains who weren't as memorable as Commander Krill or Strannix.
  • Memetic Mutation: Penn telling his henchman "Assumption is the mother of all fuckups!" is easily the most quoted line of the movie.
  • Narm: Penn's Say My Name in the second film: "RAAAAH RYBACK!!!" Now used in Botchamania to introduce some good ol' Ryback botching.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Bobby wasn't the most likable of characters for being very annoying and constantly whining and complaining about all the danger he got himself into. But as the movie progressed, he took several levels in badassness, and went from being a whiny sidekick to a heroic partner who helped Ryback save the day.
  • Retroactive Recognition:
  • Special Effects Failure:
    • Certain shots in the film scream "green screen," such as when one Mook suffers from a Disney Villain Death.
    • The shots of Grazer One are also pretty obvious 90's CGI.
  • Squick: Ryback sending Dane falling to his death by closing the chopper door on his hands, slicing his fingers off.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: The spectacular train crash is THE most-remembered scene from the second film. The power of miniatures and well-placed cameras, people.
