  • Arc Fatigue: The arcs given to some of the side cast are often criticized for not really going anywhere, notably in Nagisa's arc, which sets up a typical Extreme Doormat character development plot only for Nagisa to end up submitting to Izumi by the end of it anyway, leading many watchers to wonder 'what was the point'?, and contributing little to the plot as a whole. This isn't helped by the fact that the teams that were given arcs have as much relevance by the end as the teams that weren't. (That is, as mere rivals for our leads, themselves just as underdeveloped in the end.)
  • Audience-Alienating Premise: Despite the majority of the teams having yuri subtext, yuri fans are not very happy that the main team has a crush on their faceless male coach who leaves them to their own devices right before an important tournament. It gets worse for them when another team has a male crush as well.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: While the makers clearly didn't want to go for the (admittedly obvious) yuri route, it still would have made for a more compelling story if Yuri and Megumi had to sort out their feelings for each other while also trying to perform well at the tournament. As it is now, their constant bickering comes off mostly as mean-spirited, and it doesn't help that the guy they're fighting over is quite the bell-end.
