YMMV / Turner and Hooch

Go To

  • Funny Moments: When you have Tom Hanks as a Neat Freak police investigator who has a dirty, slobbery Dogue de Bordeaux as a witness for a murder in his own home, you're bound to have some of these. Particularly this whole scene
    • Hooch's introduction. He comes flying over a half-door, charging toward Scott, who desperately tries to divert Hooch's attention to the muffin he's holding, to no avail; Hooch tackles him to the ground and latches onto his throat. All of this is in glorious slow-motion, making it twice as funny.
      • After this, Scott is pissed.
Scott: Yeah, yeah, I'm fine. I was looking forward to a nice, quiet cup of coffee, but NOW I'M AWAKE!
Amos: Oh, don't let him see that you're angry. H-he has a sense, and he spots and reacts real bad to anger.
Scott: What is the matter with him?! [as Hooch looks at him oh-so-innocently] I brought him a muffin, he knows me!
Amos: What, know ya? He didn't even break the skin. Why, this dog loves ya, boy.
    • When they get to the animal clinic, Hooch plants himself on the sidewalk and refuses to budge...until he sees a pretty collie pass by and go into the clinic, whereupon he follows her, dragging Scott behind. Hooch goes through a doggie door, repeatedly causing Scott to smash into the door before he's dragged through the dog door.
    • The whole "This is not your room" spiel.
    • "Oh, no, no, no, you're eating the car! DON'T EAT THE CAR! NOT THE CAR! Oh, what am I yelling at you for? You're a dog. Don't understand a word I'm saying. What does it matter anyway? This car is gonna be David Sutton's in a couple of days. Here, you hungry? Here. Here's an ashtray. Eat that."
  • Harsher in Hindsight: In-universe example; After having been put in Hooch's chokehold, being dragged around and having to wrestle the dog into cooperation, Turner declares he wants Hooch patched up properly so he can shoot him, once he arrives at the vet's. And then Hooch gets shot at the film's finale.
  • He Really Can Act: Tom Hanks was mainly a comedic actor at this point in his career, but he knocks the gut-wrenching scene where Hooch dies the fuck out of the park, an early showcase of his dramatic talent.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Turner in one scene angrilly calls Hootch "Stupid dog !!"
  • Signature Scene: The "Don't Eat The Car!" scene is the most well-known part of the film, mainly due to it being used in test footage of Toy Story and being a very popular line to use in student CGI animation tests.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • After Hooch chases off the murderer, he returns to Amos' body and sniffs it, whimpering. Then he just sits there and howls mournfully. Even the next morning, after the body has been removed, he refuses to leave the spot where his master died.
    • Hooch's death, and Turner's reaction. Made even sadder by the fact that Tom Hanks had actually grown quite attached to Beasley, the dog who played Hooch, and since this was the last scene they shot together he was legitimately crying, because he realized that he was going to have to actually say goodbye to him soon.
  • Ugly Cute: Hooch.
