  • Author's Saving Throw: While staying within the bounds of the prejudiced Bond that Fleming wrote, Horowitz tries to add some shade to some of the more severe Values Dissonance in the Bond novels: Jason Sin, and Koreans in general, are given a more sympathetic hearing, and no characters are treated like Oddjob (Fleming had Bond address him as "ape", for instance). Bond's old friend - and former roommate - Charles Henry Duggan is introduced, and although they once almost apparently came to blows over it, the fact that Charlie is a gay man is just one of those "foibles" Bond accepts of an old friend. The inspiration seems to be Fleming's well-known friendship with the Transparent Closet Noël Coward.
