Touken Ranbu Great Invasion

Go To

  • Ass Pull: For some players, the revelation that Mikazuki and the starter swords have a close relationship came out of nowhere, given that they had no set up for these relationships in the browser game and no history in common beyond being the game's mascots since its inception.
  • Broken Base:
    • Fans have conflicting opinions on the sudden close relationship reveal between Mikazuki and starter swords, feeling its inconsistent since the swords don't interact in-game and lack historical connections, thus shouldn’t be as close as the event implies they are, and that it ignores that everyone has their own interpretation of the citadel. Some also argue that the relationships may be pandering, especially in the case of Yamanbagiri Kunihiro/Mikazuki Munechika, due to the stage plays influence. note  Other players believe the bonds between characters in the citadel develop off-screen, naturally evolving over time under Saniwa's guidance, and that it would be inevitable that the characters would become close, even if we don't see it. And finally, another camp argues the starter swords would never allow a comrade to die, regardless of initial closeness and criticizes those demanding the game remain a blank slate with no story or progress for their own sakes.
    • Some fans of starter swords object to the event's alleged bias towards Mikazuki Munechika, especially citing the final boss sequence in which a cutscene of the starter sword being empowered by Mikazuki in blade form and cutting through it's previously impenetrable barrier was played as making the starter swords seem "useless" with their own strength and placing Mikazuki in a "special" or "better than" position. This was met with criticism of those same people for missing the point, as the starter sword wielding Mikazuki was intended to show them combining their strengths so that they could break the barrier and defeat the enemy together (as further demonstrated in the full team attack that follows), rather than implying that Mikazuki was superior to everyone.
      • Interestingly, while Nitro+ seemed to address many criticisms of the Great Invasion story during the second iteration of the event, one sword being strong enough to weaken the Final Boss barrier wasn't one of them. Instead, Kashagiri is the only sword that breaks the Oni's barrier, allowing the team to finish it off, as opposed to the Great Invasion where it required a two-man effort.
  • Iron Woobie: While there were some hints that Mikazuki wasn't quite the carefree old man he appeared to be, this event cemented him as a true Stepford Smiler with no regard for his own life if it meant saving the citadel and atoning for all of the swords he'd broken up to that point.
  • Signature Scene: One of the scenes that gets talked about to this day is the sword Mikazuki Munechika showing up with a sprite and voice acting and talking to the Saniwa and the player's chosen starter sword like normal.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: According to some players, a "Save Mikazuki Munechika plot" would have made a bit more sense if it had focused on Touken Danshi with whom Mikazuki has known history with pursuing him such as Honebami Toushirou, with whom he previously shared a previous owner, the Sanjou swords, or even the other Tenka Goken.
