- Broken Base: Are the changes in the plot permissible conventions for the film, or arrogant changes that distort the original personality and the motivation of the characters?
- Harsher in Hindsight: Brad Renfro plays a mischievous boy who constantly gets in trouble. In December 2005, he was arrested for attempting to buy heroin. Then in January 2008, Renfro died from an overdose of heroin at the premature age of 25.
- Hollywood Homely: Despite the fact that Huck is homeless, he always has clean skin and a perfectly clean face with a modern hairstyle. Moreover, even his rags are always clean.
- Ho Yay: Although here Tom as in the book has the official female Love Interest, their relationship with Huck is suspiciously tender and emotional for the friendship of the guys. In particular, Tom always looks admiringly at Huck's face, or begins to be capricious when something does not suit him in their "relationships."
- Nightmare Fuel: Any scene with Injun Joe. He's terrifying. He constantly uses a Jump Scare every time he appears. One time he threatens Tom not to expose him or else he'll kill him. Then Joe just...vanishes.
