YMMV / Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan

Go To

  • Adorkable: Kyoka Izumi's excitement at the prospect of buying a house in the eponymous Millionaire Village and her treatment of the baby bird she and Rohan find in front of it are both mildly funny and rather adorable.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Was Yoma actually an incarnation of Hermes, or was that just Rohan's own way of trying to comprehend how batshit insane he was in the last few weeks of his life? After all, body image problems are commonplace among models, and the stress of maintaining a perfect figure may very well have caused some deep-seated mental issues to bubble to the surface...
  • Fridge Horror:
    • Rohan’s encounter with Yoma Hashimoto. At best, Rohan killed a man via taking a competition too far (granted, he was a serial killer who had just broken Rohan's hand and was willing to let him fall to his death over said competition) and has to live with the consequences. At worst? Rohan has incurred the wrath of a God in Human Form via the avatar of Hermes. If Rohan had looked down through the window and Yoma was somehow clinging to the walls or window? There's a very good chance he would've died.
    • The situation of the rich man's daughter in "At a Confessional" would probably be terrifying from her perspective. One minute she's hanging out with her father (or at least who she thinks is her father), then she blacks out for a bit, and when she wakes up her father is dead on the ground, decapitated where he stood. Not to mention that, because of her father's actions (which she probably wasn't even aware of), there's a curse hanging over her head too - and unlike her father, she has no way of preparing herself for it.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Rohan spoke poorly of Americans in his original appearance because they wouldn't publish his work, dismissing them as having no taste. Who ends up commissioning the animated adaptation of his spinoff? The American company Netflix, who actually released it in the US a few months before they acquired Diamond is Unbreakable, the latter held up by rights issues.
  • Memetic Mutation: Referring to Yoma Hashimoto as Yu Narukami from Persona 4 has become somewhat of a meme due to the two sharing a similar appearance with the exception of Yoma being more buff, but as Yu is a Memetic Badass, the joke further proclaims that Yoma is merely Yu's next form, and that Yu is so badass that he broke between realities to guest star. Also becomes Hilarious in Hindsight given that Yu and Rohan both premiered in the 4th part of their respective series with both Persona 4 and Part 4 having a notably similar plot of youths in a Japanese town solving a murder mystery with their Fighting Spirit powers. Yoma being an avatar of Hermes also relates to plots in Megami Tensei as a whole where characters are tied to Gods in some way.
