YMMV / This Heat

Go To

  • Anvilicious: The band were pretty unsubtle about their problems with society, but everything they railed against is still present today, and in the case of things like environmental destruction, nuclear proliferation, and mass surveillance, is much worse than it was in their heyday.
  • Awesome Music: Their discography is short but strong. There really isn't a weak point in either of their albums, and "Health and Efficiency" is an absolute banger of an EP.
  • Broken Base: A pretty minor case, as both albums are equally revered, but there is a lot of debate between fans on whether Deceit was an Even Better Sequel or a Sophomore Slump from the sound of their debut.
    • Likewise, whether the sessions the band did for John Peel were superior to their studio counterparts causes quite a stir.
  • Epic Riff: The bass riff in "Horizontal Hold" and the guitar riffs in "Paper Hats", "S.P.Q.R", and "A New Kind of Water". "Triumph" has a pretty memorable kazoo riff.
  • Fan Nickname: Their self-titled debut is affectionately known as 'Blue and Yellow' (in reference to its Minimalistic Cover Art) by both the band and their fans.
  • Mainstream Obscurity: They're monstrously influential in the world of avant-garde music, having been cited as an influence by everybody from Tatsuya Yoshida to Steven Wilson, but good luck finding somebody outside of that milieu who's heard of them.
  • Sampled Up: In hip-hop circles, "Horizontal Hold" is known for providing the main instrumental sample of Danny Brown's track "Adderall Admiral".
  • Signature Song: "Horizontal Hold" and "S.P.Q.R" are the main candidates.
  • Spiritual Successor: Animal Collective or black midi are often considered the closest thing to a modern equivalent of them.
  • Tear Jerker: "Not Waving" is a song that starts off really creepy and then just becomes viscerally sad, describing a person ending their life via drowning because they can't keep up with modern society.
