YMMV / The World at the End of Time

  • Fridge Horror:
    • Viktor Sorricaine and his wife Reesa McGann at the end of the book when one thinks they're the last Earth-born humans and that everything of the outside Universe, starting with Earth, they knew is very, very, very far in the past. Exacerbated by the fact that Viktor has lost some memories due to brain damage caused by being a Human Popsicle and that most of the colony's records-that stored Earth's knowledge-that the Newmanhome's colony possessed got corrupted after being submerged in water for a long time.
    • Wan-To to a much greater extent at the book's finale. It's virtually as old as the Universe itself and unlike Viktor has lived every second of almost all the Universe's history and has lots of memories after countless quadrillions of years. Since the energy provided by proton decay is so meager, it must wipe out large parts of its memory in order to depart to the last surviving stars of the Cosmos, not only lobotomizing itself but quite especially sending to oblivion almost the entire history of the Universe he has recorded.
    • The different alien races mentioned to exist that are destroyed, whether because one of Wan-To's companions find that they're bothering it, just because Wan-To is paranoid of being found by them as they use (or may use in the future) the same particles it uses to transform normal stars into Sorricaine-Mtiga objects, or simpy because they blow themselves apart with said knowledge.
  • Science Marches On:
    • The colony uses magnetic fiches to store knowledge. Had the novel been written years later, they'd probably use improved solid-state drives instead.
    • While most of the science described in the book is still correct, with the discovery of dark energy and how it's accelerating the Universe's expansion Wan-To would have much harder times late in the book even with tachyons and all that fluff at its disposalnote .
