- Accidental Aesop: If you have to wet nurse a puppy, make sure it's being nursed by a dog of similar size if the same breed isn't possible. It'll save it from a lot of confusion when it grows up.
- Retroactive Recognition: Mako as Mr. Toyama's assistant, one of his first credited movie roles. He was later best known as Po-han in The Sand Pebbles, Akiro in Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer, Aku in Samurai Jack, and Iroh in Avatar: The Last Airbender.
- Tear Jerker: Much of the movie. Brutus's attempts to fit in with his dachshund siblings are heartbreaking. He is trying to be a good dog, but Fran yells at him because he breaks the furniture. While it is portrayed in a more lighthearted manner, the movie is actually about a dog who cannot figure out what he is doing wrong or why he cannot please the mistress of the house. The scene that shows him standing next to the other competing Great Danes is also a Tear Jerker in a more heartwarming way, because he can finally see that there are other dogs like him.
- Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Fran. One would think she would catch on to Brutus's need for the same love she showers on the dachshunds, but she only thinks about how Brutus's desperate attempts to be included are inconveniencing her.
