YMMV / The Tales of Team OMEN

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Oscar. Did Team RWBYJNR treat him as badly as he says they did, or is that him thinking that they hate him, when in reality, they don't?
      • How aware Oscar was when Salem turned him into a weapon. He says multiple times that his memory is kind of fuzzy, but things he brings up when the story is in his point of view point to him remembering more then he lets on.
    • Whitley. Is he genuine in his attempt to help Team OMEN when he takes them to Vacuo, or does he feel like he just owes them a favor?
      • 'the plan is simple' seems to hint at the latter.
    • Miltia. Is she genuinely remorseful about her role in the Fall of Beacon, or is she just looking for someone to blame?
    • How much does Ruby know, or even care, about Oscar's feelings? During 'what you are in the dark', she seems to be somewhat unaware of his mixed feelings towards her.
    • Did Winter give Penny part of her Aura because she genuinely cared, or because she was ordered to?
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The various comedic functions that Mercury's leg serves, such as having rollerblades in them, makes it all the more apparent just how crippled he'll be without them when he sells them to Rhubarb in order for her to help them
  • Jerkass Woobie: The entirety of the team.
    • Oscar's been through some horrible stuff, like torture and being forced to almost kill his friends.
    • Mercury's been abused by his father, being molded into the perfect assassin, and only killing him out of self defense.
    • While the details aren't outright told to us, Emerald speaks plenty of times about getting mugged on the streets in Vacuo, so it's safe to say that her life hasn't been a cakewalk.
    • Neo's parents were verbally abusive to her, due to her selective mutism. Her father forced her into playing piano because he couldn't, and was very harsh on her whenever she messed up, her mother was cold and treated her like an invalid, and her siblings were obviously of no help, leading to Neo snapping and killing her mother.
  • Like You Would Really Do It: The story makes it look like Tyrian just cut off Whitley's arm. Of course, seeing as how he's brought up later, we know he survives.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Quite a bit.
    • Oscar's powers are nothing short of disturbing if you think about it for too long.
      • Same with Whitley's.
    • Neo's murder of her parents. While she is somewhat in the right, it's hard to deny how terrifying it would be for your child to all the sudden snap and stab you in the throat.
    • Tyrian's absolute decimation of Team OMEN is both badass and terrifying. It doesn't even seem like he's really trying, more so like he's toying with them, like a child playing with their food. True to the show indeed.
      • What's worse, is that after defeating them, he gleefully and with great pleasure, attempts to murder Whitley, who's probably not much older then fourteen at this point. The amount of fear and panic is palpable.
    • The absolute state of confusion and terror Oscar must have been in while under Salem's control. Just imagine for a minute: all ability for rational thought is shut down, and you're trapped only in a miasma of your own anger and suffering. You can only sit and succumb to it, with no idea where you are or what's really happening. And it's implied that he was stuck in this dementia like state for three months.
    • How calm Emerald is when she sees Oscar come out of Salem's meeting room injured. She's grown so numb to Salem's constant abuse, that she doesn't even react to it anymore.
  • Realism-Induced Horror: Team OMEN, despite the fantastical situation they're in, have some very real and disturbing trauma that they carry with them, inflicted by the villains. It makes them all the more despicable, getting a firsthand look at how these people have ruined our protagonists lives.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • The ending of 'i wish you could have told us sooner' ends with Oscar having a brief moment of lucidity, realizing what he looks like and what he's become, and breaking down into tears, knowing there's nothing he can do to stop it.
    • Qrow trying to reach out to Oscar, who rebuffs him, despite his attempts being genuine.
    • Emerald's cold acceptance of her abuse at the hands of Cinder and Salem. And when she sees the cycle being repeated on Oscar, she feels powerless to stop it.
      • The fact that one of the days she considers to be the best days of her life is when Cinder rescued her, despite Emerald knowing how horrible Cinder is. Despite all of the abuse, she still cares, and she can't let it go.
    • The entirety of 'what you are in the dark'.
      • To start, Ruby's team is forced to leave her behind in the mines, possibly to die. She can hear them trying to break through, but screams at them to leave, saying that she's not important enough to come back for.
      • Oscar's fervent attempts to get Ruby to ditch him. He obviously still recognizes her, but he's so lost in the delusion that she doesn't care about him that he tries everything he can to prove it.
      • How Oscar gets kidnapped in this universe. Instead of the Hound jumping him, he willingly walks into an ambush, leaving Ruby behind. What's worse, he actively pushed her away, tricking her with a hug so that he could handcuff her to the ship using the gravity cuffs.
      • Ruby asking if he's being forced into working for Salem, which he quickly denies.
      • Ruby saying her favorite place is the Beacon courtyards, only that's not there anymore.
      • The Ceberarn. It's a grimm that induces fear if you look into it's eyes. When Ruby does, she sees Beacon, Atlas, and all the people she's failed. The worst part? Oscar's one of those people, even though he's right next to her. And he'll never know.
      • It's also implied Oscar looked into it's eyes too. We never get to see what he saw, though.
      • Oscar's attempt to kill Ruby. The entire time, his concious is trying to break through the grimm, and the internal debate is so strong, it reduces him to a screaming fit.
      • And after this, Ruby still comforts him, even after his attempt on her life. This is the last straw, Oscar having a total meltdown. Doubles as a Catharsis Factor, as it's nice to see him finally express emotion after penting it up for so long.
      • This exchange:
Oscar: Why do I remember you? Why do I - what’s wrong with you? - What’s wrong with me?! What’s wrong with me?!

    • The ending. Oscar reveals his identity after turning Ruby's desprate pleas for him to return down. Ruby then returns to Vale to meet up with her friends, and the minute she sees them, she bursts into tears.
“Hey, kiddo?” Qrow looked at her, concerned. “You okay?”

Ruby sniffed through the waterfall of tears cascading down her face “I just -” But what could she say to them that wouldn’t make them hate Oscar? Hate her? Would she lie? “...I love you guys so much-” She finally managed to warble out. “-I’m so sorry for leaving you behind -”
    • Neo's backstory. She was abused by her rich parents, who constantly treated her like an invalid and forced her to play the piano when she clearly didn't want to, neglected her, and called her slurs. It's no wonder she snapped.
    • The scene where they get to Roman's old warehouse. It's fairly untouched, and Neo finds a map that she and Roman had used during their Vale heists. It's a sad reminder of simpler times.
    • Neo and Emerald finally admitting to themselves that they feel bad about letting Beacon get destroyed.
    • Whitley, despite his snobbish behavior, has a moment of clarity near the end, and uses his semblance to blow himself up. After that, he fully expects them to reject him for his freakish semblance, just like his father did, to which Neo disagrees.
    • How Neo and Roman met. Neo, after murdering her mother, ran into the forests behind Argus to escape, meeting up with Roman, who had just escaped Brunswick Farms, implied to have been the only surviving member of the family there.
    • Mercury's return to his childhood house, and his subsequent breakdown. Despite the fact that his father is dead, he still feels like his father won, simply because he's still around.
