YMMV / The Sun Soul

  • Broken Base: The ending of Chapter 22 has been understandably causing some of this, with some swearing off the fic entirely and others strengthened in their resolve to power through.
  • Complete Monster: Professor Elm is depicted as a sinister opportunist obsessed with gaining revenge against his rival Professor Oak. Following many attempts to steal Oak's research in the past, Elm turned his allies in the Hoenn region against him by claiming Oak was planning on betraying them. When Oak arrived to confront Elm, the resulting battle led to the deaths of Professor Birch, Norman, and most of his family. Elm later adopted Norman's daughter May, lying to her about his hand in her father's death with the hope of controlling her Savant powers. After learning of Mewtwo's plan to wipe out humanity, Elm mobilized a vast army to help him destroy the Kanto region in the hopes of being spared. He launched a series of attacks using his Red Gyarados that destroyed Pallet Town, wiped out much of Kanto's food supply, and laid waste to the Cinnabar Islands. Leading his armies on Cinnabar, Elm succeeded in killing Professor Oak and planned to use his armies to betray Mewtwo and slaughter anyone who stood in his way.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Mewtwo is a powerful Psychic-type Pokémon and the true mastermind behind the entire story. Initially created by Team Rocket to retrieve the Sun Soul, Mewtwo rebelled when he learned he was designed to die within a year. Believing humanity was too selfish to share the world with Pokémon, Mewtwo decided to wipe out humankind. Using the Sun Soul to amplify his powers, Mewtwo modified millions of Pokémon to serve as his personal army. Reaching out to Professor Elm, Mewtwo convinced him that he would be spared if he amassed an army to help wipe out the Kanto region. Although he was opposed at every turn by Team Rocket, Mewtwo was able to manipulate Ash Ketchum into dismantling their operations. By convincing Ash to free Sabrina from captivity, Mewtwo was able to break her hold over Zapdos and used it to devastate the armies gathered to stop him. Mewtwo managed to concentrate Kanto's forces to more easily wipe them out and offered to spare Ash due to his fascination his Savant powers. Eventually, Ash used the Sun Soul to fuse his consciousness with Mewtwo's, and the two agreed to work together to help restore balance to the world.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • The Weedle spawning grounds in Viridian Forest, the monstrosities in Mt. Moon, the creatures in the fog of Lavender Town, the scenes inside the Pokemon Tower, how Haunter attacks Team Rocket's Charizard... let's face it, this entire Fic is Nightmare Fuel.
    • Haunter is becoming more and more of one. If it's not reducing people to bloody messes, it's laughing maniacally about doing so.
      • It gets worse when Mewtwo visits Ash and directs him to rescue Sabrina from Team Rocket. Haunter's behavior upon sensing Mewtwo's mind reaching out to them suggests that Mewtwo is strong enough to scare even Haunter, despite the fact that Mewtwo would suffer from an Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors related disadvantage. The disadvantage had been previously stated to render psychics almost helpless against ghosts: the implication is that Mewtwo is a powerful enough psychic that he can still easily take down ghost types.
    • Ash killing an Aerodactyl by summoning his Snorlax. In its throat.
  • Shocking Moments: The battle scenes, especially Chapter 22's battle for Celadon, tend to draw out a lot of these if the reviews are anything to go by.
