YMMV / The Smurfs (2021)

Go To

  • Awesome Art: The show has incredibly fluid animation for a TV-budgeted CGI cartoon, with special attention paid to the exaggerated movements of the characters.
  • Bizarro Episode:
    • "The Pluffs!" has Brainy and Blossom traveling to an alternate universe via thunder, where they meet alternate versions of their friends.
    • "Smurf To The Future!" has Handy create a giant cuckoo clock that can make him and Blossom travel back in time. Later, they accidentally travel all the way to the stone age.
  • Broken Base: Most fans would praise it for being true to the comic books, while others prefer to stick with the 1981 series (despite the animation and pacing being an improvement over Hanna-Barbera's take on the characters).
  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Smurfblossom. Some fans like her for her cute, funny and bubbly personality, while others dislike her for being inconsiderate and rude to her fellow Smurf Girls.
  • Cargo Ship: Brainy adores his smurfway, as shown in "Where's My Smurfway" and treats it as a Companion Cube.
  • Creator's Pet:
    • Brainy carries this from the original series. He appears by far the most out of the other Smurfs besides Papa Smurf. He gets off a little better than his 80s series counterpart, however, since his personality is altered to become nicer, caring, and actually smart.
    • Jokey. Despite appearing in less episodes than Brainy, he gets a lot of screentime. Majority of the episodes that focus on him feature him causing trouble for the Smurfs for his own personal gain.
  • Demographically Inappropriate Humour:
    • At the end of "Poet Slam" when the Smurfs celebrate Poet and Lily's tie in the poet contest, a Smurf's pants can be seen being thrown in the air.
    • In "Smurfy Secrets", Jokey claims he "smurfs" in Farmer's fields like slugs regularly do.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • Grouchy saving Baby Smurf's life in "Diaper Daddy".
    • In "Smurf Your Seat Belts!" Handy's smile after Storm saves his life and calls him a friend. Not long after, he returns her the favor and she hugs him. Specially sweet taking in count they spend most of the episode bickering.
  • He Really Can Act: Despite only a couple of actors being used for the series (particularly in the French dub, which only uses seven actors) several of them have put on good perfomances. Specific examples include Kaycie Chase (who voices Jokey in both dubs) and Ilse La Monaca (who voices Greedy and several other Smurfs in the English dub.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The Japanese dub pulls one regarding Brainy Smurf's voice actor: Even in the Japanese Wikipedia and this very wiki, the information about the original Japanese dub of the 1981 series went until many edits by the local editors, including a fake new dub cast done by Animax Japan, which included Yūki Kaji as Brainy Smurf, very likely as a gag over his role as Eren Yeager in Attack on Titan. Cue 2023, and Kaji himself confirmed that he will voice Brainy Smurf in the dub of the 2021 series.
  • Ho Yay:
    • Scaredy kisses Brainy three times when he agrees to help him get through Halloween in "The Scariest Smurf".
    • At the end of "Dreamer: Master of Love" Dreamer kisses Grouchy, much to the latter's shock.
  • Moe: Clumsy, who in this series is trying to be a Smurf with lots of dreams, which could work if he wasn't so Clumsy.
  • Unexpected Character: A lot of viewers haven't expected Baby Smurf to be included in the cast, given that he had been Adapted Out from previous Smurf media (excluding the comics).
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Fans of the 80s cartoon were disappointed with most of the male Smurfs being voiced by female actresses in the English dub, with Clumsy, Lazy and Scaredy being the most notable examples.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Tailor. Despite being a major character in the 80s series and being a recurring character in the comics, he is extremely underused, with him only appearing in three episodes so far.
  • The Woobie: Scaredy in "The Scariest Smurf" spends the episode trapped inside a robot without being capable to communicate with his fellow Smurfs and is completely terrified about it.
  • Toy Ship:
    • Once again, Smurfette and Hefty, especially since Hefty is the only Smurf that has consistent feelings for Smurfette.
    • Brainy and Blossom have gotten this often. The two have both kissed each other on the cheek in "Where's My Smurfway?" and Brainy priorities Blossom's safety unlike the other girls.
