YMMV / The Sith Resurgence

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: Aliana's Sith name, "Amorosa", is Spanish for "Loving." While this is intended to symbolize how much Aliana loves and cares for Rey throughout the series, it can also refer to Aliana's prowess in the bedroom.
  • Angst? What Angst?:
    • When describing that her mother was killed by a Jedi and she was critically wounded by the Padawan, Aliana was rather aloof and detached about it.
    • In Chapter 15, it was revealed that Aliana was putting on an act to keep Rey from asking too many questions until she was ready to talk about it.
    • When Luke dies protecting Aliana it's never brought up as a point of angst for Aliana where she questions her opinion of him.
  • Anvilicious: Holdo and Aliana both agreeing that even if there is light left in Kylo Ren, they aren't obligated to reach out to him on that basis alone, and that even if he were to redeem himself, someone would likely kill him for his past actions regardless, is a rather blatant effort by the author to write off a character, they personally dislike, as a lost cause.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: For a character that has no pivotal role in the story Sentaor Tiralli has gotten this treatment, largely because he's Aliana's father.
  • Fanon: While it’s well-established that Darth Mayrik was a loving mother to Aliana, there is very little information about her father Senator Tiralli of Dantooine who, while not a deadbeat dad, isn’t aware of Aliana’s existence. But that hasn’t stopped the fans from interpreting him as a big sweetheart who’s ecstatic about discovering he has a daughter (much like Darth Vader from a certain Internet parody series) and even takes Aliana out to the carnival or for ice cream. Some have even imagined him to be similar to Aliana and her Sith title, as in very serious when acting as a Senator but very kind, polite and cheerful when off-duty.
  • Fridge Brilliance: Aliana's dismissal of Kyber crystals due to them being Force Sensitive and therefore "finicky" is followed by her stating that her lightsaber uses a Qixoni crystal. In Legends, the Qixoni crystal actually was a Force Sensitive crystal, but naturally attuned to the Dark Side. Since Kyber Crystals in canon have to be "bled" in order for Sith to use them, it would make sense why she is so dismissive of them in favor of crystals that will already work for her. This is more of an added bonus for those who know about Qixoni crystals, as the story treats them like a non Force-Sensitive gemstone to create a standard lightsaber.
  • Fridge Horror: When Kylo Ren starts fantasizing about "All the horrible things he'd like to do to" Aliana as payback for destroying his reputation and humiliating him comes off as his typical edgelord fixations. But when combined with Kylo Ren's predatory nature and his First Order-ingrained belief that Alie being gay is a blight on the Force... ugh!
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Darth Amorosa is a Darksided woman with a great deal of trauma and anger toward the Jedi, and an uncomfortable relationship with the Skywalker family. Two years after her debut, Star Wars introduced a character with this exact same foundation in Reva Savander.
  • Informed Wrongness: Leia during the first act of the story. Her distrust of Aliana is derided by many other characters as unwarranted, but having fought in the Rebellion and studied Galactic History, she has no reason to cut Aliana any slack. Leia frequently makes the point to Aliana that her hostility toward the Republic is destructive and her moral objections to the Republic's corruption is naive and will doom her to be destroyed by it and that it's better to do her best to work with them and help them improve. She also makes a point in that, for all the Republic's problems, pissing them off and going rogue is not a workable solution to the fact that Aliana doesn't like them.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Carl, the Stormtrooper who really wants to find a better job and doesn't realize that "severance package" doesn't mean what he thinks it means in a fascist military cult.
  • Ron the Death Eater: Aliana gets this from some readers, who believe her to be a generic fascist and horrific abuser due to in story decisions. Two hatefics have been written portraying her this way.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic:
    • Kylo Ren gets this from some readers who see him as being more rational and level headed then the the main characters. This can make him seem much more sympathetic then what was intended.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic:
    • Aliana is meant to be seen as an Unscrupulous Hero, but for some readers she's a bit too comfortable with using threats, violence and murder to solve her problems. This isn't helped by the fact that Aliana is never portrayed as wrong about anything in-universe and everyone who even slightly opposes her or her methods is often depicted as either ignorant or straight-up villainous and bigoted.
    • Mayrik is portrayed as a cherished mother and a good person, with the creator stating she's Lawful Good, but some readers can't forgive her for directly helping to traffic Rey as a slave child, even if Mayrik is portrayed as regretful.
  • Squick: Aliana in one chapter is shown fantasizing and talking to Rey about how cute it would be if they were romantically involved if they were children and related to each other.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: After Aliana is badly hurt and is in danger of dying, Luke Skywalker arrives and uses the Life Force Transfer technique to save her life. You'd think this would be a good opportunity for Aliana to think about her relationship to both Luke and her Mother, and how she may have made some wrong assumptions about her past, but it goes completely unacknowledged.
    • Also related to the above the duel that almost kills her also takes Aliana's leg. You'd think the loss of a limb would be a good opportunity to delve into Aliana's psyche, maybe tell how Rey's support helps her through a traumatic event, but once she gets refited with a cybernetic leg, it never gets brought up again.
      • Rey learning that Mayrik had transported her to Nabuu to be sold as a slave could have offered an interesting point of conflict between the main characters, but this is quickly glossed over in favour of just having Rey be fine with the fact that she was Made a Slave.
      • Aliana losing her leg could have offered an interesting story line about losing a limb, but once Rey builds her that new leg, the whole thing just turns into Just a Flesh Wound.
  • The Woobie
    • Aliana lost her mother at the hands of Luke Skywalker and spent the majority of her adolescence having to fend for herself and complete her own training with only a droid for company. She eventually found herself to be so lonely that she actually hid her Sith heritage from the first friend she'd managed to make in years.
    • Rey's issues with her parents and her mind violation from Kylo Ren are heavily expanded upon, resulting in her dealing with severe trust issues throughout the majority of the story and a fear that people around her might try to use her for their own ends.
    • Kylo Ren can be this from a certain point of view. He always loses to the main character, isn't respected by anyone in the cast, and is clearly hated by the Narrator themselves. This can make some readers feel more pitty for him then what was intended.
