YMMV / The Simpsons S6E22 "'Round Springfield"

Go To

  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Homer tells Lisa about listening to advice, such as "don't feed the bears" and lifts up his arm, revealing a bear cub (which doesn't seem to be alive) latched on, with no further explanation and it never appears later.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: In-Universe example — a later episode has Lisa finding out that, while "Bleeding Gums" was a Cool Old Guy to her and thus his passing away is a true Tear Jerker, he was abusive (albeit in a passive-aggressive manner) to his nephew, who also plays jazz, with her being the "favorite" to the other guy's The Unfavorite.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Bart being the one to tell Lisa of a belief in reincarnation after she later became a buddhist.
    • The ending (with Mufasa mistakenly calling Simba “Kimba”) briefly leans into the then-popular theory that The Lion King ripped off Kimba the White Lion, a claim that has, in the interim, comprehensively been proven to be not only false but that if it were true, that Tezuka's son claimed Osamu would have enjoyed this fact.
    • Bill Cosby's reference to New Coke being around forever was originally meant as a Take That! at what turned out to be an Epic Fail. The references to Cosby's previous pitches for Kodak film and Jell-O Pudding Pops were just meant to add context to the joke. They were still common in 1995 when the episode aired, but in the 21st century the Take That! applies to them too. Film photography has largely been replaced by digital photography on smartphones, while Jell-O Pudding Pops have long since been discontinued because they were unprofitable.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • No one ever suspects the butterfly!
    • "Cheese-eating surrender monkeys" became a huge meme in the early 2000s (much to the dismay of some of the people who worked on the episode) when France declined to get involved in the Iraq war.
  • Unintentional Period Piece:
    • The joke about the "Ultimate Pog" which bears the likeness of Steve Allen was made at the height of the pogs craze, and the "outdated fad" is supposed to be Steve Allen. Moreover, Allen died in 2000.
    • Yet another episode to feature a reference to The Cosby Show, this time in the form of a flashback to Bleeding Gums Murphy making a guest appearance on the show.
  • Values Dissonance: The fact that Krusty has a sexual harassment suit and makes a failed attempt at hitting on Ms. No-Means-No on live television would be considered a bigger deal nowadays thanks to heightened concerns over sexual harassment and discrimination, especially in the entertainment world (with the likes of Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Louis C.K., Bill Cosby, among others having their careers torpedoed due to committing sexual misconduct).
