• Unintentional Period Piece: Smithers mentions that he was discharged for nude paintings of his navy buddies. This pins the episode in the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" era which forbade LGBTQ participation from military service in the United States from 1994 to 2010.
• Values Dissonance: The plot kicks off when Lisa writes the International Olympic Committee a letter to ask for the torch to pass by Springfield in a clearly admiring tone of the IOC and the Olympic Games. In the decades that followed, the Olympic Games have gained a backlash due to the Games being a net economic drain on host cities (instead of the boom that was previously assumed) while the IOC and its sponsors gain the benefits as well as the IOC's complicity in sportswashing for regimes such as Russia and China. It's highly unlikely that Lisa would be so fawning over the IOC today.
