YMMV / The Secret Life of a Mermaid

Go To

  • Alas, Poor Scrappy: Many fans couldn't help but feel sorry for Tess in Season 5.
  • Anti-Hero: Tess in early seasons, and the three main girls qualify, especially Amy and Kelsey.
  • Just Here For Fanservice: Some people (especially boys) have made some extremely perverted and seductive comments about how good looking the main cast is, but the most famous ones are directed at ether Tess or Brenna.
  • Panty Shot: Amy gets one in "Birthday Splash". The fans won't let her live it down as its mentioned in EVERY. SINGLE. COMMENT!

  • Dramatic Effect: Lampshaded in "Birthday Splash" after walks down the stairs in slow motion.
    Amy: "Hey guys!"
Kelsey: "What up with the slow-mo?"
    Amy: "It's for a-"
    Amy: "Dramatic effect,"
  • Aloof Older Sister: Tess is hardly anything that counts as nice, is really pretty, witty, and is pretty much Amy's rival until the latter starts to catch up to her.
  • Evil Is Sexy: Tess is the only thing that comes close to a main antagonist in the series and has been shown wearing a bikini a couple of times. When Tess left for a while in Season 4, Terra, Blaire's mom took her place as Season 4's Big Bad.
  • Friendly Fandoms: With H₂O: Just Add Water, due to their similar premises.
  • Les Yay: Amy and Kelsey are shown to get into really sexual poses throughout the series, especially in the Christmas Episode, where they both sung a more friendly version of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" with Amy singing, I quote: "I'll take your hand, your tail looks real," when Kelsey spills her drink and falls on the floor with a tail, and Amy. Gets. On. Top. Of. Her! The song ends with Amy sitting on Kelsey's lap, straddling her while they're looked in a gaze, holding hands and widely smiling just as Brenna walks through the door!
    • The Season Finale has a brief moment where when Brenna pops a tail when Amy sprays water on her to keep her from having a "hulk experience", when Blaire bends down to stroke her tail, saying its "pretty", but is shooed away by Brenna.

    • This is basically what the entire episode "The Lonely Islander" is about.
    • All the girls get into this position at least once in a while, including Tess (with her creepy attitude towards Amy after finding out she was a mermaid) and Terra (with her obsession towards having her only daughter "join her at sea.")
  • What an Idiot!: What has happened everytime the girls go to the waterfall? Hmm...
    • First Amy turns into a mermaid for the first time, causing her to keep it a secret.
    • The second time, Amy becomes deathly ill and almost spills her secret.
    • The third time, Brenna follows an entranced Amy (who Brenna didn't know yet) and gets turned into a mermaid the next day.
    • Kelsey attempts to become a mermaid, but is stopped by Amy and Brenna just in time.
    • In an ironic twist, after saving Kelsey from drowning, Amy and Brenna drag her to the cave just as the waterfall pours down on them, causing Kelsey to become a you-know-what and Amy to split her powers and Brenna to lose hers.

    • The girls visit the cave only to find out they temporarily lost their tails that night.
    • They come here after attacking Tess in the Season Finale
    • They come here only to cause a series of attacks around town and lose Amy's cousin Andy and have no idea what happened at all the previous night.
Let's just say, the waterfall has brought some really bad luck to them.
  • Noodle Incident: Apparently, Amy got locked on the roof once. And Tess got her a pet rock once for her birthday that somehow died, and they became best friends:
Amy:(to an unconcious Blaire) "He was much better company than Tess anyway..."
  • The Woobie
    • Stoic Woobie: Blaire. Amy, Brenna, and Kelsey have some shades of this as well.

How well does it match the trope?
