YMMV / The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System: Ren Zha Fanpai Zijiu Xitong

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The production team did not hold back with giving the donghua memorable theme songs. For example, "Song of Forgotten Words" (忘言歌) by X-NINE and R1SE member Zhao Lei perfectly captures the xianxia setting established by the novel, with the lyrics encapsulating Luo Binghe's character well.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Luo Binghe is divisive among Western fans, mostly because of his status as the protagonist's love interest. Either you acknowledge that while he has some issues, he's nevertheless a well-written and likable character who has his own baggage and tries to work through his flaws; or you see him as a mere low-key manipulative Fetishized Abuser who has it too easy due to Plot Armor both in and out-universe.
  • Broken Base: This novel is basically the most controversial of Mo Xiang Tong Xiu's published works, with the main pairing turning off many readers (most prevalent in the Western fandom due to Values Dissonance and expectations from what fans from different cultures perceive to be an LGBT+ work). Either you think BingQiu is a nuanced and complex pairing in their own right, or you think they're too shallow, problematic, and toxic.
  • Can't Un-Hear It: Some fans who are introduced to Wu Lei's voice acting in the Animated Adaptation are likely to be in for a whiplash when they hear his other roles, especially in other danmei adaptations.
  • Fanfic Fuel:
    • It's not a surprise that there are fanfics that cover the possibility of how the rest of the cast — or at least Luo Binghe — would react when they learn "Shen Qingqiu's" true identity.
    • There are plenty of fanfics that dive into Luo Bingge traveling to alternate universes to find his own Shen Yuan seeing as he can already do that as established by the "Face Off" extra.
    • Fanfics of Shen Jiu returning are also not extreme rare largely due to the fact that his arc was left entirely unresolved in canon.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • When the donghua was released, some parts of the fandom started to affectionately call younger Luo Binghe "Bunhe".
    • Western fans often refer to Shang Qinghua as "Hamster Bro", given how he comes off like a hamster stuffing roasted watermelon seeds into his mouth when he's forced to help out Shen Qingqiu.
  • Fanon:
    • Luo Binghe is near-universally accepted in the Western fandom to have wavy hair, a muscular build, and a cleavage-revealing outfit, despite the latter never being mentioned in the novel and the first two outright contradicting his canon description.
    • Mobei-Jun while never fully described in the novel, he's depicted in fanart with a muscular build, a blue marking on his forehead, dark hair and wearing dark robes with fur on it. While some don't mind his appearance in the Animated Adaptation, there are still other fans who prefer his fanon design more.
    • Shang Qinghua's Animal Motif amongst fans seems to be a hamster.
    • Many fanfiction writers tend to portray Shang Qinghua as more cowardly or stupid than he actually is, and essentially blame him for everything bad that happens in the original story. While this makes sense since he was the author, it also ignores the fact that he was writing a work of fiction, and could hardly have predicted his own death or that transmigration was actually a possibility. It's likely influenced by Shen Qingqiu, since the main story is told in his perspective, and he makes his disdain for Shang Qinghua as the original author very well known.
    • It's popular to portray Shen Yuan as having been terminally ill or otherwise sickly in his first life.
  • He Really Can Act: While Wu Lei is already an accomplished voice actor in China and is one of the veterans in the industry, both those who are familiar with roles and those who are not unanimously agree that he outdid himself as the protagonist, nailing how he'd sound when he's speaking either as Shen Yuan or as Shen Qingqiu (but especially as Shen Yuan, considering the character's wide range of emotions and dialogue). Not to mention, this is his first role as the shou (bottom) rather than the gong (top), the latter of which he's commonly cast as due to his baritone; and he still managed to more than nail his role with great finesse.
  • Ho Yay: For Yue Qingyuan and the original Shen Jiu. After seeing Shen Jiu's past, Yue Qingyuan's near Undying Loyalty towards Shen Jiu can almost be seen in an entirely different light. They were both raised with one another as slaves, were sold to the Qiu household before they were forced to separate when Yue Qingyuan escaped to cultivate and then promised to return one day to rescue Shen Jiu. When he ultimately wasn't able to, Shen Jiu destroyed the Qiu manor and managed to cultivate and ascend to his current position. The air around the two former friends almost reads like an really messy romantic pair having fallen out with one still trying to make their relationship work. When Yue Qingyuan thinks he's going to die, he tries to apologize one last time to Shen Qingqiu for not being strong enough for him and Shen Qingqiu sadly thinks it's truly heartbreaking that the person he's telling these words to no longer exists. And to twist the knife even deeper, Yue Qingyuan's words weren't just an apology, they were an explanation that would've cleared a long-standing, deeply personal misunderstanding between them. Also in the original canon, Yue Qingyuan did not make any move to save Shen Jiu likely because he knew he would die, but the moment Luo Binghe sent him Shen Jiu's legs he blindly got up to try and save Shen Jiu only to die in the end.
  • Launcher of a Thousand Ships: It's already kind of canon that Shen Qingqiu has quite the harem. Besides Luo Binghe, there's also Liu Qingge, Yue Qingyuan, Zhuzhi Lang, and Gongyi Xiao.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Fans joked that before the donghua had made an official release date that the characters were "stuck in the microwave". Given that the only content they've had for years were just the models of Luo Binghe and Shen Qingqiu spinning around, the joke took off and stuck.
    • When fans of MXTX's other works complain about some content they receive, SVSSS fans are quick to joke that they're surprised that Scum Villain gets any content at all.
  • Moe: Luo Binghe, especially when he’s first introduced, is a pure ball of sunshine. One can easily see why Shen Qingqiu quickly warms up to him despite knowing what Luo Binghe would do to him in the future.
  • Narm Charm: Even those who have a few gripes about the animation can't help but agree that the 3D animation helps lend to the series' brand of humor and actually works in the adaptation's favor since the story's setting is in an In-Universe novel that plays many tropes straight as much as it deconstructs them. One example is the generic and copy-paste faces given for the nameless background NPCs, which makes sense considering that is the role they play in the novel proper.
  • Nausea Fuel: Ties That Bind. Plants literally grow through the skin of the person affected by it. Shen Qingqiu's entire arm ends up covered with plants growing out of it. It can only be cured by burning the plants off with a hot coal several times a day.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: The only thing most people will remember about the short-lived manhua adaptation is that one of the staff that worked on it was an Mo Xiang Tong Xiu anti-fan and would openly hate on her on their social media, and that complaints about this staff member led to the manhua's cancellation (or at least indefinite hiatus).
  • Portmanteau Couple Name:
    • BingQiu for Luo Binghe x Shen Qingqiu. And on that note, BingJiu for Luo Binghe x Shen Jiu.
    • MoShang for Mobei Jun x Shang Qinghua.
    • LiuShen for Liu Qingge x Shen Qingqiu.
    • QiJiu for Yue Qingyuan x Shen Jiu.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Anyone new to the reading the novel might not initially like Ning Yingying, who In-Universe is written by Shang Qinghua to be the annoying character who may mean well but always (albeit inadvertently) causes trouble as much as she gets in trouble. As soon as Shen Qingqiu's changes to the plot caused her to grow out of the trope, she comes across as more likable to the reader.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: While there's some creepiness to be found in the characters' movements and some of the character models, it's obvious that the animators and put a lot of effort in capturing the facial expressions of the main cast, as the viewer can see exactly what kind of emotion they're displaying.
