YMMV / The Prince of Tides

• Award Snub: 7 Oscar nominations, none of which it won, and Barbra Streisand wasn't even nominated for Best Director.^note One episode of Father of the Pride has her visit Siegfried and Roy and among her many requests is said Best Director Oscar.
• Awesome Moments: Three escaped cons bursting into the home and raping Tom, his mother and his sister is tragic, disturbing and nightmarish. Luke showing up with a shotgun and blowing two of them straight to hell where they belong (one gets it in the groin, the other in the head), while mom kills the last rapist with a knife in the back, is most definitely this.
  • It's even more so in the novel: the family's pet tiger Caesar gets one of them, Tom gets one by going Batter Up! with a statue of the Virgin Mary right to the rapist's head, and Savannah ices the last one with shotgun blast to the groin.
• Values Dissonance: For a therapist to enter into a romantic and/or sexual relationship with a patient (or a family member of a patient) is massive breach of professional ethics, but the movie presents it as purely romantic. This was noted even at the time the movie was released.
