YMMV / The Phantom of the Opera (1962)

Go To

  • Designated Villain: The Phantom, who is in this version entirely a victim despite posters and plot synopses calling him "the figure of terror incarnate" seeking his "hellish revenge". He doesn't even kill anyone or actively seek any sort of retribution (which many viewers would likely see as justified) against the evil man who was the cause of all his suffering, Lord Ambrose d'Arcy.
  • Fridge Brilliance: The Phantom taking off his mask before leaping onto the stage to save Christine from the Falling Chandelier of Doom seems totally random, until you consider that he probably needed to remove it to better see what he was doing. It obstructed his vision, which was already impaired due to his having only one eye.
  • Narm: The scenes of the Phantom relentlessly giving the bewildered Christine singing lessons after he has her kidnapped. His over-the-top shouting and dramatic gestures and her clueless-but-resigned (sometimes even irritated) reactions can be unintentionally hilarious. Especially when he seems to randomly go off into his own little world for a moment, muttering to himself, only to realise she's been staring at him the whole time like he's nuts.
  • The Woobie: Professor Petrie. The poor guy's music is stolen from him, his face is horrifically disfigured by acid, he lives as an outcast in a hidden grotto beneath the opera house for years, and then in the end he saves Christine from a falling chandelier, getting crushed to death by it himself.
