YMMV / The Phantom of Manhattan

  • Angst? What Angst?: At the end, Pierre witnesses the death of his mother and learns that Erik, whom he's barely met, is his actual father. Once he sees him unmasked he decides to stay with him rather than Raoul, and that's apparently that for tears and mourning. Also, normally a child forced to choose between parents is often wracked with a sense of guilt towards the "rejected" one — but he has no problem or guilt in choosing a man he's barely met over Raoul, who raised him.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: Andrew Lloyd Webber provided a back-cover quote for the book giving it his seal of approval, but that didn't keep it from flopping with the fandom. Love Never Dies effectively rendered it Canon Discontinuity, though the two works share many story elements.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Cholly Bloom thinks Raoul is brave and tough when he when he let Pierre choose which father to stay with, and the reader is expected to follow suit, especially given that he never remarries after losing Christine. But what he does in fact is thrust all the responsibility for a momentous decision on a 13-year-old child.
