YMMV / The Other Kingdom

Go To

  • Base-Breaking Character: Nearly everyone in the main cast qualifies in a way.
    • Astral: A lot of viewers love her optimism, good heart, determination, loyalty to her people, and love of nature, while another camp sees her as too naïve for her own good and a creepy stalker towards Tristan.
    • Morgan: Most viewers see admire her obsession over fairies, and love that she's a great and loyal friend to Astral who doesn't abuse Astral's status. Although some others (no pun intended) see her as a bad influence on Astral.
    • Devon: Some people relate to his insecurities about his social status and admire his smarts in school; while different people view him as a generic Loser Protagonist.
    • Brendoni: Half the audience loves that he's a total Wild Card and sees him as a funny side character with a Hidden Heart of Gold, while the other half views him as an unnecessary character with terrible and lousy humor
    • Tristan: A good piece of the fandom sees him as a great, loyal companion, with a sensitive side and a good heart with the right amount of lovable traits and the perfect boy for Astral to get into a relationship with, and good use of the Mysterious Past in order for a second side of him to be revealed, but a handful of additional viewers view him as a Satellite Love Interest with little-to-no traits to make him stand out on his own. The group in the former camp were especially unhappy about Tristan's big reveal as a fairy prince of Spartania getting little-to-no context or explanation thanks to the series being Cut Short.
    • Hailey: She's either a stereotypical Alpha Bitch with little purpose other than antagonizing Astral and her friends or a semi-relatable character with various humorous moments and Hidden Depths who's surprisingly very entertaining.
  • Critical Dissonance: On IMDb, where the show has a score in the mid-5s, very few reviewers gave the show a rating, and few who did were not exactly fans (especially if one were to read some the comments, some of which were posted when the series was still on the air). Google reviewers are far more pleasant towards the show, praising the show's unique aspects and wishing the series wasn't shown to the door so abruptly.
  • Cult Classic: Despite the series only lasting one season and not being a big hit with critics, the show was still able to win over a small but strong, devoted fanbase due to its unique concept, complex lore and charming characters, and the big plot twists in the second half.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • The fandom absolutely loves Oswald due to him being a Cool Old Guy and a master swordsman and warrior who also serves as a loyal companion to the Athenians, especially Astral. Then there's also some of his adventures he's mentioned to have had and the fact that he was around during the era of Napoléon Bonaparte.
    • Peter Quince/Petrithon is another fan favorite due to being a caring father to Devon, a Reasonable Authority Figure to him, Astral and Brendoni, as well as being open-minded and in general avoiding and subverting the stereotypes that most teen sitcoms have of parents being neglectful, abusive, absent, inept or embarrassing. His popularity only increased when it's revealed that he was actually King Oberon's older brother and therefore Astral's uncle, and he maintains his friendliness even after his true intentions are revealed, and even reforms himself. You'd be amazed how many fans ask for Mr. Quince to get a Day in the Limelight or him to interact with his son, niece, nephew more, and especially his brother.
  • Evil Is Cool: You'd be forgiven if you tried to cheer for Versitude's side from time to time, due to just how cool and manipulative she is.
  • Fanfic Fuel:
    • What was the story behind Petrithon/Peter Quince and how he abandoned the Athenian crown in order to hang out with a mortal woman and give birth to Devon? This could make a compelling story in itself.
    • What are the other realms of the 2nd kingdom like? While various realms other than Athenia had been mentioned throughout the series, we never actually get to see just what the realms are like. That means the likes of Spartania, Laconia, and all the other realms are open to anyone's interpretation.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • King Oberon initially preventing Astral from traveling to the "other" world in the pilot episode — saying he didn't want Athenia to lose its future queen and he didn't want to lose his only daughter — becomes a lot more difficult to watch when it's later revealed his older brother left Athenia to stay in the "other" world forever and live a normal life abandoning the throne.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Hailey, of all people, becomes this in "Let There Be Cake" in which we finally learn the story behind her failed "Family Studies" class, revealing she accidentally blew up the school after a recipe gone wrong. It haunted her for a long time, and it's one of the main reasons she's such a pessimist in the present.
  • Magnificent Bitch: Versitude is King Oberon's mysterious, two-faced advisor as well as a foe of Princess Astral and Winston Althazar. Viewing the "others" as little more than hers to mess with, she'd put on a facade of being a trustworthy ally in Oberon and Titania's presence, while secretly spying on Astral and interfering with her time on her "other walk" and making Winston's time in Athenia miserable, whether by tricking him into eating berries that nearly turned him into a donkey, framing him for "destroying" a summerberry bush, or placing him on trial for his life. On top of that, she went behind the Athenian king and queen's backs to work with King Reed of their enemy tribe Spartania. Winston attempts to expose Versitude's true colors, only for the latter to become aware she's being spied on, and intentionally set up a series of fake events that cause him and Peaseblossom to appear suspicious, so King Oberon wouldn't listen to them.
  • Moral Event Horizon: While selling out Athenia and secretly allying with Spartanian King Reed behind the king and queen's back is definitely a heinous act on its own, Versitude truly showcases just how depraved she can be when she remorselessly locks Astral and her friends inside the school gym, knowing Astral and Brendoni would be unable to use their powers to escape during the solar eclipse, and that Athenia was at risk of being bulldozed and destroyed at the time. If you had any doubts on whether Versitude was truly a bad person — or elf, in her case — let this moment alone put those doubts to rest.
  • One-Scene Wonder:
    • Since the series gets abruptly canceled before the twist can be addressed, Tristan's fairy form winds up being this, despite receiving less than 2 minutes of screen time.
    • Parham Rownaghi of Degrassi fame really makes the most of his sole appearence as Prince Cliff, son of King Reed and Tristan's long-lost brother.
  • Portmanteau Couple Name:
    • Tristan and Astral's relationship is referred to as "Tristral"
    • Morgan and Devon has "Dorgon"
    • Hailey and Brendoni has "Haildoni"
  • Tainted by the Preview: Various audiences who saw the show's first teaser and trailer, weren't exactly won over by the show's concept. They saw it as just another show where a teenager with supernatural powers goes to a non-magical high school and had very low expectations in terms of the show's quality.
  • Too Good to Last: It only had 20 episodes, but attracted fans who lamented the series' abrupt cancellation, particularly with the reveal about Tristan being a prince and Devon a half-fairy and Astral's cousin.
  • Vindicated by History: Back when the series was on the air, a couple of viewers weren't exactly pleased with the show, calling it a knock-off of Disney's Star vs. the Forces of Evil due to the two shows having a similar premise, and latter series being in its prime. However, after The Other Kingdom was taken off the air, and Star vs. Evil's polarizing Grand Finale several years later, the hatred for The Other Kingdom began to die down as those viewers realized the show definitely had some unique aspects to it and had some potential to be great in its own right.
