YMMV / The Orville S2 E5 "All the World is a Birthday Cake"

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Children born under the sign of Wasanda are said to be future leaders of Regorian society. It doesn't take much of a leap of logic to suggest that the Prefect might be a Wasanda himself. It then follows that the whole thing is simply a stratified Fantastic Caste System whose leadership class are personally invested in maintaining the status quo beyond the mere scapegoating of Giliacs, whether or not they actually believe the astrological nonsense they're spouting.

  • Idiot Plot: There's a perfect solution in front of the crew the whole time, by just pointing out that being from different planets means their constellations are different. However, if the Rigorians were this superstitious, it might not work.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: As mentioned above, some people have WMGed that the ruling Rigorians know their astrology system isn't real and simply use it to enforce a caste system. Alas, this concept is never explored in the episode, and the vehemence with which the First Prefect defends this system seemingly demonstrates that they do wholeheartedly believe in it.
