• Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The scene where Dr. Kelp's formula initially goes horribly wrong and turns him into a monster. It never affects the plot at all since afterward he becomes Buddy and is never brought up again.
• Draco in Leather Pants: In the DVD Commentary, Jerry Lewis revealed that he got more fan mail addressed to Buddy Love than to Professor Kelp, which made him regret not making Buddy more outright evil.
• Nightmare Fuel: The previously mentioned scene where Kelp's formula fails and transforms him into a monster before he becomes Buddy. The creepy music and lighting, the Body Horror he goes through, and his hallucinating his bird with the Dean's head mocking him for his failure are all guaranteed to cause a few nightmares to any young kid who happens to watch the film.
• Values Dissonance: Even if she reciprocated Kelp's feelings and was a consenting adult, a teacher dating a student would still be frowned on even today. The 1996 remake resolved this by making the character an older grad student, which is a bit more acceptable.
