YMMV / The Nightmare Room

Go To

  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • In Scareful What You Wish For, Shia LaBeouf's character tosses away a toy called a Megamorpher.
    • The story of Scareful What you Wish For, about a child's toy being given life so they can be best friends forever is played much less terrifyingly, and way less child friendly, in Ted.
    • My Name is Evil has a character named Glen Martin.
  • Hollywood Homely: Jeremy in "Four Eyes" is considered a loser just because he wears glasses, which is a commonly-held and very outdated belief in fiction and real life.
  • Jerkass Woobie: The Villain Protagonist in "My Name is Evil" is just a kid who wants to be normal. He's pretty much forced into villainy.
  • Moment of Awesome: Micheal Moon's parents in Full Moon Halloween getting arrested near the end for their horrible prank.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Buddy in "Scareful What You Wish For" passes it when he turns Dylan into a doll so they'll be together forever.
    • Although arguably Buddy crossed it earlier when he snuck strawberry jelly into Dylan’s friend Ryan’s sandwich, which resulted in Ryan having a bad allergic reaction.
  • Spiritual Adaptation: While Tangled Web and Four Eyes were not based on any book, they have their basic concepts in common with Liar Liar and Visitors.
    • The episode of Camp Nowhere keeping the book's concept of a camp full of ghost kids means it's as close as we have to an adaption of the Goosebumps book Ghost Camp.
    • Similarly, the episode of Don't Forget Me! having someone who turns out to be part of a group of lost kids and joins them despite previously trying to fit back into normal society, makes it work as an adaption of The Haunted School.
  • Tear Jerker: A good chunk of Don't Forget Me!, as Peter is slowly being forgotten by everyone around Danielle. Special mention goes to when her parents have forgotten him and she lashes out at her mom, which horrifies them. It reminds you that the parents are just much victims in all this.
  • The Woobie:
    • Dylan in "Scareful What You Wish For" just wants to grow up and move on in his life, but ends up in a Fate Worse than Death because of his old, beloved doll.
    • Jeremy in "Four Eyes" does all he can to save humanity from invading aliens. He ends up killed for his troubles by his own best friend, who turns out to be the evil leader of the aliens.
    • Spencer in The Howler. He lost his cousin Ian and is now obsessed with ghosts as he wants find Ian's to get closure. His obsession is made fun of both by his big brother and one of his friends.
    • Laura and Joe in They Call Me Creature. Laura is feeling distant from her once jovial father, and starts becoming afraid of the woods, which she loves exploring, and Joe has accidentally became a ravenous pig creature and while his mom is trying to cure him, she starts going too far to the point where he has to fight back.
    • But the biggest example is Deborah in the "Thrillogy". Her own mother framed her for her evil witchcraft, and when she escapes her mother, she is cursed to have bad things happen that she is blamed and then hung for. She gets a chance of revenge in the present but even at the end, it's implied she is still trapped on the island with her horrible mother.
    • Selena of "Shadow Girl" is forced to spend a month with her aunt, uncle, and cousin Jada who treats her like shit. Jada does things like call Selena "Moo Cow" and tricks Selena into humiliating herself at school to the point everyone was screaming at her to go home (Jada told her it was Spirit Day and got Selena to dress in their rival school's colors). She even flat out tells Selena she hates her with Selena having no clue what she ever did to her cousin. Then things get scary, such as Selena's mother saying she can never see her again, and Selena's best friend Beth severing ties with her because someone is threatening her. Selena later discovers all this is because she's part of a legacy of superheroines connected to "The Book of Fates," which decrees Selena will become the titular Shadow Girl and eventually kill Jada, who is meant to be her archenemy Red Raven. No matter how much Selena refuses to be a part of this, Jada and her aunt bitterly tell her she has no choice but to follow the book. Luckily, Selena manages to evoke a Loophole Abuse by only shattering the pendant that gives Jada her powers. In this sense, she has successfully "Killed" Red Raven which now allows Jada to become Shadow Girl like she always wanted and allows Selena to reunite with her mom.
