- Broken Base: The album cover. Depending on who you ask, it's either a brilliant subversion of one of Bowie's most beloved albums that expertly represents the demolition of the past, or it's just lazy with a pretentious justification.
- Even Better Sequel: The Next Day is generally considered one compared to Reality, Bowie's acclaimed Alternative Rock album from 2003 and the last album he had made before The Next Day.
- Harsher in Hindsight:
- The line "here I am, not quite dying" at the start of each chorus on the Title Track is a bit awkward to hear in light of Bowie's death just two days after the release of his next album.
- "Valentine's Day", which is about a school shooting, became this after the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, in which a gunman opened fire on a high school in Parkland, Florida, and killed 17 students and staff members. The shooting occurred on February 14, 2018, Valentine's Day.
- Nightmare Fuel: "Heat", a slow, sparse Scott Walker pastiche that teeters the line between art rock and Post-Rock.
