- Nightmare Fuel: The monoliths aren't viscerally scary, but they're absolutely relentless. It's surprisingly effective.
- The various scenes in which people being essentially turned to stone by the space rocks is compared to the effects of polio. This might take some explaining, but even as late as the 50's polio was scary. At best it left you partially paralyzed; at worst, you were trapped in an iron lung, unable to move, for the rest of your life. To the generation that first saw this film, this was pure undiluted horror.
- Hilarious in Hindsight: Les Tremayne's character's last name is Flanders, and the little girl's last name is Simpson
