YMMV / The Longest Day in Chang'an

Go To

  • Aluminium Christmas Trees: Ge Lao is a black man in ancient China. It's not as impossible as it sounds; the Tang Dynasty had contact with many places, including the Byzantine Empire, and people from all over the world came to China. Ge Lao was a former 'Kunlun Nu', a term meaning Black Slave during the Tang Dynasty. There is even a story written during the period depicting a heroic Kunlun Nu who saved his master.
  • Genius Bonus:
    • Three of the songs used in the series are actually poems written by Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai note .
    • Early in the series Li Bi recites part of a poem written by the real Li Bi.
  • Ho Yay: Long Bo is disturbingly touchy-feely with Li Bi when he captures him, dragging him around the lantern tower and keeping a hand on his neck even when there's no need for him to stay so close.
  • Narm: Djomon Hounsou speaks English as his character Ge Lao in the trailers. In the actual series, though, he ends up dubbed over in Mandarin by Chen Jianbin, who sounds nothing like him and whose lines are wildly out of sync with his lip movements.
  • The Woobie: A Zhi. She has skin ulcers that no one has been able to heal, so her brother keeps her locked up. It's taken a toll on her sanity; when Li Bi first meets her she's Laughing Mad and can't understand why he isn't happy to be a prisoner. She even says she'd rather not know what it's like to be cared for, because if she knew she'd be reluctant to die.
