YMMV / The Legend of Hei

Go To

  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Nezha only appears in the climatic battle and ending, but has garnered as much fanart as the main characters.
  • Draco in Leather Pants: Out of all the antagonists, Feng Xi gets this treatment the most. He might be a ruthless character fully willing to endanger and uproot thousands of humans and is perfectly willing to doom Xiao Hei for his powers despite his affection for the child, but many fans still find pity for him for his sympathetic backstory and camraderie with Xiao Hei early on. Being a good-looking, powerful fighter may have helped.
  • Foe Yay Shipping: There are a lot of fans of Wuxian/Feng Xi thanks to their rivalry and their similar but opposite presence in Xiao Hei's life.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Feng Xi is the leader of a group of Elfins who wanted to live in a world without humans. His previous homes were industrialized, and desiring Godhood to make such a world exist, Feng Xi realizes the power young Luo Xiao Hei has and takes him under his wing, offering him a home with his gang of Elfins. After being forced to leave Hei behind, Hei is adopted by Wuxian, a spirit, forcing Feng Xi to get informants to talk through his sheer charm, then Feng Xi sends his minions after them. During the struggle, Feng Xi decides to kidnap Hei and drains him of his Dimension power, leaving the young cat demon comatose. After a climatic battle with Wuxian in Xiao Hei's Dimension he created, Feng Xi easily defeats Wuxian despite Wuxian being the better fighter. Xiao Hei realizes he was wrong to hate humans and trust Feng Xi, wakes up revealing he has two Dimensional powers. Wuxian and Hei work together to defeat Feng. Offering him a chance to redeem himself by living in a world with humans, Feng Xi instead commits suicide by falling off a tree he created and burying his own body.
  • Moe: Xiao Hei—both his cat and human form are just huggable.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Feng Xi crosses it when he restrains Xiao Hei and forcefully steals his Domain power to use for himself, which kills him (albeit temporarily). The act not only angers Wuxian and Xiao Hei, but even his fellow elfin Luo Zhu finds the act appalling and storms off in disgust.
  • Sequel Displacement: Prequel in this case. While the web series that predates the movie is rather popular in its native China, not a lot of first time viewers (especially international ones) were aware of it. It doesn't help that the movie, especially at the time of release, had very few ties to the original shorts besides the main character and the credits sequence.
  • Tear Jerker: Feng Xi's death at the end. Rather than redeem himself and help find a solution where humans and elfins can coexist, Feng Xi rejects and kills himself by turning himself into a giant tree, while apologizing to Xiao Hei. Xiao Hei even questions if Feng Xi really is a bad person.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: Nezha, for sporting long hair with Odango and having a feminine voice and attire. It's even lampshaded where Xiao Hei asks him if he's a boy, and Nezha stating that he keeps his hair buns so other people can recognize him.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: The film itself already has beautiful visuals and bright colors, however the fight scenes really shine, as they are generally fast paced with camera pans that imitate live action films.
