- He Really Can Act: Casey Affleck proves his real talent as Lou, making him compelling and monstrous. Jessica Alba also impresses as Joyce, making Joyce very sympathetic and what happens to her genuinely heartbreaking and painful to watch.
- Moral Event Horizon: Lou crosses it when he beats Joyce nearly to death. Then comes the reveal that he's killed people many times before.
- Nightmare Fuel: The scene of Lou beating up Joyce is very painful to watch. The film one ups itself when he murders Amy.
- Paranoia Fuel: That friendly, affable guy you've known for years? He could be a psychopathic killer and you might never know it.
