  • Audience-Alienating Era: Rave On!! and That'll Work due to the poorly-received vocals of Mark S. Orr, and Stompin' Grounds due to it being much softer.
  • Covered Up:
    • Due to the wide variety of cover songs in their repertoire, this was bound to happen. Some listeners may not even be aware that, say, "Oh Lonesome Me" is a cover.
    • Brother Phelps covered "Rag Top", a cut from Pickin' on Nashville, on their second album.
  • First Installment Wins: Pickin' on Nashville is their most acclaimed and successful album.
  • Replacement Scrappy: Most fans and critics, and even the band itself, disliked Mark S. Orr's tenure as lead singer, due to his scratchy and more bluesy delivery compared to Ricky Lee's twangier voice. Averted with Doug, whose voice is very similar to his brother's, and further averted with Richard Young's increasing turns on lead vocals — while he also has a scratchy and bluesy voice, he's been able to adapt it to the band's style more cohesively. It also helps that, especially since Kenney left, Richard does most of the harmony vocals on songs sung by Doug.
  • Tear Jerker: "Crazy Jim", a heartfelt tribute song to Richard and Fred Young's father James, who would hand out rocks to people as a reminder of being rich in spirit and not in money.
