YMMV / The Jeffersons

Go To

  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Zara Cully as Ma Jefferson, and Marla Gibbs as Florence. The latter got her own Spinoff and later her own show.
  • Heartwarming Moments: In one episode, George fires Florence, but before she leaves for good, she reveals that a potential business partner is actually a crook trying to scam him, which she learned by eavesdropping on the phone. After the crook leaves, George joyfully declares that he is rehiring Florence, agrees to give her a raise, and embraces her as he proudly calls her the "nosiest maid."
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In "Not So Dearly Beloved", George has to give the eulogy at the funeral of a spiteful employee, during which the attendees silently reflect on how the deceased wronged them during his life. Years later, Sherman Hemsley would play "Judge Robertson" on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, a character who also dies and has a funeral full of mourners who reflect negatively upon him.
  • Once Original, Now Common: The existence of programs like The Cosby Show, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and Blackish tends to make people forget that they all owe their existence to The Jeffersons. This was the first time ever that a Black family was shown as middle-class, successful, and relatively well-off on television.
  • Replacement Scrappy: Some viewers didn't take well to Damon Evans' portrayal as Lionel. Even Damon himself stated that he didn't really enjoy his time on the show, and it often showed in his later episodes. This could be the reason they brought Mike Evans back, as he was much more well received.
  • Values Resonance: With all the problems of the rich getting overstuffed McMansions and worsening the urban sprawl of suburbia, the Jeffersons are content to relatively simply live in a "De-luxe apartment in the sky." No doubt Louise put her foot down with George for them to stay in the city and not get themselves in an unnecessarily expensive home.
