YMMV / The Heartbreak Kid (1972)

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: For all her flaws, Lila seems like a lively, fun, devoted young woman who just needs to grow up a bit (she's only 20). Kelly, on the other hand, is extremely manipulative and self-absorbed, and judging from all the guys who say hi to her when she's walking to class, Really Gets Around. That said, the movie definitely doesn't take Lenny's side and the ending suggests he finally realizes how badly he screwed up.
  • Award Snub: Eddie Albert and Jeannie Berlin both got Supporting acting Oscar nominations. Albert was up against James Caan, Robert Duvall and Al Pacino for The Godfather, plus the eventual winner Joel Grey, so he didn't have much of a chance. But the Supporting Actress field was fairly weak and the winner and her film (Eileen Heckart for Butterflies Are Free) are considered fairly obscure today, so you can make a case that Berlin got snubbed.
  • Hollywood Homely: When the third side of the triangle is Cybill Shepherd in her early twenties, it's impossible for Lila not to fall into this trope, but Jeannie Berlin is actually cute in an Adorkable way. But the film makes it clear that it's her personality that ends up repulsing Lenny.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: The theme song is very similar to The Mary Tyler Moore Show's "Love is All Around".
