• Anvilicious: In the book's setting, all slashers are exclusively implicitly misogynist men who preferentially target women, as emphasized by an early paraphrasing of a Carol Clover statement about how boys are only killed incidentally or for "mistakes" whereas girls are murdered simply "because they are girls." Adrienne's Friday the 13th-inspired backstory even swaps preeminent female slasher Mrs. Voorhees out for a man named Mr. Volkner.
• Complete Monster:
  • Skye Elliott, son of Dr. Carol Elliott, is a misogynist who arranges the death of the first Final Girl Adrienne to help set up the others. He groomed and corrupted the teenager Stephanie and disguised her as a "Final Girl" to win the trust of heroine Lynette, all so he could gain access to the camp Adrienne founded and slaughter everyone there out of pure spite for his mother by murdering the victims she had helped.
• Hilarious in Hindsight: While not published until 2021, the first draft was originally completed in 2014, and stars a Properly Paranoid Final Girl afraid that a monster from her past is after her— this would end up being the plot of Halloween (2018).
• Jerkass Woobie: Lynette is somewhat cold and doesn't seem especially fond of men, but after what she's been through it's hard to blame her.
  • Julia is also quite abrasive but it's hard not to sympathize with her as the support group member who has undoubtedly taken the most physical damage.
  • Heather can be self centered, selfish and generally anti-social, but from what we hear about her experiences, she truly went through hell.
• Narm: The odds that Lynnette's mother, foster mother, and therapist are all named Carol are fairly low, and the fact that a highly-meta novel never draws attention to it makes it seem like the author was being uncreative when it came to names, or that the book needed another round of proofreading before it was printed.
• Unintentionally Unsympathetic: It can be hard to root for Lynette after it's revealed that she's the one who's working on the book Chris Volkner mentioned during his murder spree, and accuses Heather of doing it just because she's a junkie.
