YMMV / The Case Files of Jeweler Richard

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The Ending song, 'Only for You' by Da-iCE is absolutely beautiful.
    • Taken up to eleven through an interview with Yudai Ohno, one of the vocalists of Da-iCE and also the songwriter for 'Only for You', who states that he wrote the song from Seigi’s point of view, taking into account how Seigi views Richard. Read it here.
      • The song is sung specifically in parts between the two vocalists, Yudai Ohno and Sota Hanamura, of Da-iCE. If you connect the parts sung by Sota, it does seem to be more from Seigi's POV, which is a fact confirmed by Yudai - the songwriter. However, the remaining parts sung by Yudai match Richard's pronouns instead of Seigi's. Because Yudai only confirmed Seigi's POV in the lyrics and left the other 'ambiguous expressions' to the interpretation of the listeners, it makes you wonder if this is actually a duet.
    • The Opening song is no slouch in this area either, being written and composed by Round Table and sung by Yanagi Nagi.
  • The Catchphrase Catches On: Richard's "Good for you" has become iconic among fans, especially since it always comes in English.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • English-speaking fans of the series tend to refer to it as "JR" as the full title is quite lengthy in both English and Japanese.
    • Since Vincent doesn't appear in the anime, his existence is somewhat of a spoiler for the English-only fans, leading to him being called "Spoiler-Kun", "The Man Behind [spoiler] Bars", and "Jailed Weeb."
  • Friendly Fandoms:
    • Interestingly, there are fans of Jeweler Richard who are also fans of Yuri!!! on Ice and/or Banana Fish. Some people have noted that all three works feature a Japanese man and a foreign man as the main leads, and their relationships have Homoerotic Subtext at the very least. There's also the fact that Seigi and Banana Fish's Ash are both voiced by Yūma Uchida.
    • There's also a small crossover fanbase with B-Project, due to both series sharing the same character designer, Utako Yukihiro. Fans of both series have also noted that Richard shares some similarities in looks with Kazuna, leading to jokes that Kazuna quit his idol career to become a jeweler instead, or that Richard is Kazuna's long-lost older brother.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Any time Richard offers a helping hand to Seigi or comforts him. It really shows that despite appearing rather stiff all the time, he does care about his employee.
  • Ho Yay: Richard and Seigi have quite a few moments:
    • Seigi (and anyone else) in general is mesmerized by Richard's looks, which is not surprising considering how beautiful he is. But what makes it fall into the Ho Yay category is the way Seigi compliments his looks.
    • Richard's "confession" to Seigi via a text in episode 4. While the main reason he did it was to teach Seigi a lesson about the consequences of speaking recklessly, the nature of the message and Seigi's reaction definitely gives room for some homoerotic context.
    • Episode 7 is when Seigi first mentions that he 'likes' Richard, surprising the latter. To add to the Ho Yay, the design of the lobby that the conversation takes place in is based on a real-life wedding chapel.
      • Also, Richard's reply to Seigi about not regretting saying that he likes him.
    • In episode 8, after Richard helps Seigi, Seigi says that he really likes him, to which Richard replies by saying that he also likes him very much.
    • The novels take it even further. Seigi has a tendency to monologue a lot about Richard's beauty, both in his thoughts and out loud. This has sometimes led to funny consequences, mostly other people thinking that they're in a romantic relationship.
    • In volume 4, in order for Jeffrey to leave the room, Richard puts his hand on Seigi’s waist and pointedly asks Jeffrey to leave them alone. He also expressed displeasure at seeing his cousins eating the pudding Seigi made for Richard, stating that he absolutely does not want to share his pudding with them. The way Richard says it though, it almost feels like Richard is talking about Seigi instead.
    • Also in volume 4, Richard kisses Seigi on the cheek.
    • In volume 7, their relationship has progressed to the point that they can communicate with their eyes alone. In one scene, this is how Seigi communicates to Richard his plan to get him away from Armin.
    • Richard previously received a call from Papa Nakata, who related a story Seigi told him about how an old senpai of his accused Seigi of being Richard’s lover (specifically, aijin, a term usually used to refer to mistress), horrifying Seigi. The two of them end up discussing the origins of the term, leading to this exchange (which is mostly played for laughs, but still):
Seigi: At the next drinking party, I will tell everyone that I have a lover.
Richard: Then, I will bring a bouquet of roses.
Seigi: If you’re the one saying this, I’m scared you really would do it.
Richard: So we are not doing it? I’m disappointed.
      • Seigi imagines Richard marrying someone else, and promptly bursts into tears, shocking Richard who pulls him into a hug. Seigi even thinks to himself that should it happen, he would hug and beg Richard not to marry on the day of his wedding. After Seigi calms down, Richard kisses him on the forehead.
      • And then Seigi asks Richard “what if I were to ask you to go out with me, in the romantic sense?”. Too bad Richard didn’t quite say yes, but if the following conversation is anything to go by, he didn’t quite say no, either.
  • Idiosyncratic Ship Naming: While both RichaSei and SeiRicha are both popular ship names, the fandom has also adopted the term "Etra" to refer to the ship for Seigi and Richard, referring to Jewelry Étranger, the store they work alone together in.
  • In-Joke: Fans of the series have taken to repeating "bivalves" to each other with no context, referring to a particularly odd line in volume ten.
  • LGBT Fanbase: At least in the English-speaking part of the fandom, the series is highly appreciated particularly by queer fans for the representation of the queer experience.
  • Memetic Mutation: “A lot happened,” was how Richard described the reason he and his family are estranged, and the fandom took the massive understatement and used it for everything.
  • Mentor Ship: Richard and Seigi is the most popular ship in the series, and Richard is Seigi’s mentor.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Edward Baxter and Yamada Seiji, Richard and Seigi's aliases for the one case they go undercover. The fandom has decided to latch onto them so strongly they've nearly become their own characters.
  • Pop Culture Holiday: Seigi's birthday on the 14th of May, Richard's on the 24th of December, and Jeffrey's on June, 25th. Henry and Tanimoto also have confirmed birthdays, but the fandom celebrates them less enthusiastically. Since the timeline of the series is pretty fuzzy, they're the easiest days to celebrate (and the author has written several "Day of Celebration"-type stories for them, seeming to enjoy celebrating the days as much as the fans).
  • Squick: In volume 7, Armin Carlsbrook touches Richard inappropriately in full view of everyone, but no one comes to Richard’s rescue besides Seigi. To make matters worse, Armin is a distant relative of Richard, and has always been eyeing Richard.
  • Watched It for the Representation:
    • Tanimoto is a rare aromantic and asexual character that excites a lot of people who look for that representation.
    • Mami, a lesbian, drew similar excitement from queer women.
